I need a new career/job/something to do so I don't get bored

After scaring myself a bit yesterday and getting blue lighted into hospital, It has become apparent that I really need to find something else to do after Christmas.

I had chest pains all yesterday with shooting pains into my shoulder and collar bone. After much nagging I rang my GP who said to get there immediately. I had an EGC which was OK, I was still in a lot of pain so he called an ambulance and told them to get a shift on.
After scans, blood tests, ex-rays, more ECG things with lots and lots more leads it seems that I have torn a couple of chest muscles quite badly. Lifting dogs I guess. While there though, the doc took my pulse and while doing so, moved my wrist from its usual position and I thought that they were going to have to peel me off the ceiling.
We then had a nice chat about a change of career as he said that the wrist is well and truly shot to hell and that I really really shouldn't be using it if I am in that much pain when it gets moved/knocked or whatever. Its usually got some neoprene strapping on it to cushion it a bit and I know my range of movement and can work with it.

Anyway, doc has pronounced the wrist worse than useless and wants to refer me to the consultant that I already have. I said that I was already under a consultant and thanked the doctor.

So, this dog grooming malarkey has to stop as its getting really silly now. If I damage my wrist again, the consultant wants to fuse it which will render it totally useless and I don't want that. I have groomed for so long that I am now not sure what I want to be when I grow up.
There is an old saying that 'Frogs at the bottom of a well see only a portion of the sky'. I am feeling a bit frog like. I have been in my grooming rut for a couple of decades now and cannot think of a way out or see what I could do. I would be unable to type all day so an office job would be out. I can carry on walking dogs but its the grooming that actually pays me proper money. Hospital doc and my GP have no issues with a dog a week to keep my hand in as long as its a little'un so all big Labradoodles etc have been rung up and scratched from my client list now.
I have been racking my brains about what to do now. GP says to go on the sick for a bit, especially with torn chest muscles, and see if some proper rest will help the wrist, but as it had 6 months rest its unlikely that more is going to help, which GP agrees with.

So, any ideas anyone?
I'm quite bright, couple of degrees, an HND (but I can barely get my emails nowadays I've forgotten so much about IT), slack handful of A levels and a few more O levels. Been grooming or managing grooming places most of my working life unless I have been riding horses. I have worked in big offices (Norwich Union, KPMG, nPower, British Gas etc) but manning phones etc with a fair bit of typing with the job and I can't really face that.
I can't see beyond call centre work (gak) and dog walking at the moment so any ideas would be much appreciated. I am a bit old for Astronaut, Ballet Dancer, Acrobat etc though so I have already scratched them, as I have Bus Driver & Rockstar.

Oh dear - but at least it wasn't a heart attack!

Dog training? Kind of linked to the walking?
I don't think keyboard work would do your wrist much good.
What are your qualifications in?

What are your qualifications in?
Bsc (Hons) Archaeology
BA (Hons) Modern British & European History
HND computing
A levels in English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science & History
O levels in English, Maths, Chem, Bio, Phys, History, Economics, Music and a couple of others I'd have to look up
Pitmans: Typing
A few CSEs too: English, Maths, Biology, Music (Teachers put me in for CSEs in case I ploughed the O level)

I had considered dog training and dog psychology but have dismissed them as many of my dog trainer friends are getting out of the business and they are fed up being sued by owners who don' t do any training in between classes and then sue because their dogs are as disobedient as ever. A similar story with pet psychologists I know.

Very glad it wasn't a heart attack. I had thought it was a pulled muscle but was nagged and nagged to ring GP and the earache was outweighing the chest pain
Getting back out on digs is out of the question as I am out of practice and its too much use of the hand really. It crossed my mind to do a PGCE and teach but its not something that I think that I could do. I simply don't have the patience to teach kids. Also I see the frazzled wrecks of some of my friends and relatives when they get home with stacks of marking.

I have a friend who has a wrist problem, not as painful as mine, and she hasn't worked for 13 years. I don't know how she stands the boredom of watching bloomin' SKY all the day. Friend had her tendons done (Carpel tunnel) at the end of '99 and hasn't worked since. I have learned from her, just how I don't want to be.

I was a teacher once. I stuck it for 6 years - but was lucky enough to find a better paid, far less stressful job when I chucked it in!
So no, don't go there.
Inspiration fails me, I'm afraid, but no doubt there'll be plenty of ideas (useful and otherwise) from the rest of CC!

If you do end up unemployed, is there voluntary work you could do to save you from daytime TV? A friend of mine manages the volunteers who provide advice at the Citizens Advice Bureaus - that's quite a technical volunteer post for which you get training - it would certainly keep you mentally alert. But obviously better to get employment if you can!

Good idea volunteering. I thought that I might find a nice dog shelter to volunteer in. I am going to keep on with the dog walking side of the business to go on with. I'll see if I can take on some more customers there

I don't want to look for anything that I would have to commit too at the moment. When May comes (1 year of tenancy here) we are looking to move to Devon or Cornwall to start over. We have mates down there and Norfolk was only meant to be for 6 months while we recovered from the stress and trauma of the job in Scotland. Somehow we sort of stayed.
Hubby has just suggested being a caravan site warden, a summer job. Not practical for 2014 but certainly for 2015 and beyond. I could do that. I know what the job entails and think that I could manage that. We'd need a new grockle box for the summer but can save up for one over the next year and a bit.

Sometimes I think that I would like to use my brains in a job, sometimes I think that I am hopelessly over qualified and its easier not too.
Hubby just suggested politician :rofl: I would have to go on a course and learn some tact first though.

I left school rather early, mainly as I did not know what direction I wanted to go in.
Worked in a bank and then got into retail management. From there set up and ran my own jewellery repair business. Like you I then had problems with my wrists from the job and also had generally got a bit fed up with it.
So at the age of 40 I went for a major career change. I just sat down with careers advice book that listed just about all jobs and ways into them. With lots of training I became a property lawyer.
After working for good firms and bad ones, and being made redundant I now work from home basically self employed (sort of franchise from a law firm).
I have been doing this for 13 years now and again feel like a change.
So plans are underway to launch an on-line business in professional training.

Best advice I can give is that you are at work for a big chunk of your life so make sure you like doing what you do.

At 42 I decided to retrain as a mental health nurse and I've carried on my training (currently doing full time masters) to become a therapist. I'm also doing a level 5 management course to ensure I can become the boss if my CBT work doesn't pan out.

My point being, that a change is as good as a rest and can lead to other stuff...career wise.

Good luck.

Thank you. Have had a quick look and have bookmarked it for a proper look after dog walking today.
Hey Saluki.
Although I dont know your age & wouldn't ask - how many years 'till your state pension.
I am going to +1 on politician only if you can sleep for 6-8 hours @ work on the back benches - are a Liar/Thief/Fraudster - have a very weird/kinky sexual bent - Wasteful & prepared to own a 2nd home that you will sub let/rent to your sister/brother/other & falsely claim allowance for.
On the serious side though, if you have the interest then local office/councillor might suit or re train as a councilor for a. Marriage
b. alcohol/drugs/bereavement/family/female victims/other - in demand it would seem & might pay well.
Teaching assistant. Not the same salary but less demanding/stressful/responsibility.
Could you employ someone to do the grooming at basic wage (plenty on the dole) - is it your business ??
Whatever you do I wish you luck - too many people claiming DLA who are fit to but don't want to work.
You have restored (some of) my faith in humanity.
