OK, swee'pea99, you had a warning! Smacked botty and back to the Naughty Step for you... right now... ( ah, the crashing noises as an army of concerned professionals break down my front door)

Thank-you mr MagOO. I'm swerving towards a Compaq CQ2300, from somebody like these people.... http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=41133&tid=frooct

It is by no means a great computer, but I just do not need a great one. XP with a bit else is fine.

I'm surprised how many new XP machines are still out there.

Thank-you for everybody's help. No, swee'pea99, don't move! You do not get off so lightly....

I recently bought an HP for work (normally ACERs but none available with the spec that day). Arrived with XP installed and Win7 in the box. Bigger HDD than needed and bit more RAM but it flies and it does what I need to do.

@home I have Win7 and it has worked from day1; now on desktop and 2 laptops @home and all HomeGroup instantly.

general question - why do people recoil in horror at something that works? Only problems have been tracking (64bit) drivers for some older 3rd party peripherals. Easier to bin a couple of scanners and benefit from progress (for me).

I wasn't suggesting that Windows 7 doesn't work. For all I know, it is a vast improvement on XP. The point is, I know exactly how to use XP, and I know it will do what I want. That's good enough. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If I were you I'd get more RAM. Now's the time if you're getting a new box anyway.
I'm sure they'd upgrade it for a bit more £; it's worth asking.

Thanks for that excellent advice. I'll see how much another GB would cost.
