It seems that I've got really squeaky brakes and they might need oiling  .

I didn't know this until this evening when I was coming home and had to use them to prevent me going into the side of the van that hadn't overtaken me  .

Cue a letter to the transport manager at the depot.

Remember the golden rule of the road in the UK ( because we drive on the left ) is "Always give way to vehicles on the right" and considering the van had successfully overtaken you ( the front of his vehicle was ahead of yours a long distance before the junction ), he was then "on the right", YOU should have given way to him.

Unfair, but that's the way it is.

In a situation like that where a panel van or truck overtakes on the approach to a junction, I would ( and this is NOT 'wise after the event', I've done this hundreds of times ) stop pedalling, allow him to overtake and let his draft pull me along. It SAVES me energy.

Ooh, that's not nice. Driver failed on the don't overtake cyclists on the approach to roundabouts bit of the HC.

I have a slightly different approach, btw. I make the video public, and put both the company name and reg.no. in the youtube title and tags. I then write the company, but don't link the video directly, instead telling them to search for their company name or the van registration, thus bringing home how their drivers affect the company name directly. If the company responds well, I'll usually take down the company name and put a comment on how well the company responded.

I hope you are joking. The rule of the road is "give way to vehicles apporaching from the right", and the van hadn't ovetaken me - at no point was I behind him, I was alongside. I would love to have drafted behind him but it would have been a waste of effort to draft him for 5m.

The car in front of the van had its brake lights on in plenty of time for you to ease up before the squeeze. Anyway, there was a roundabout involved - misjudgements are to be expected are they not?

The car in front was indeed braking and I had stopped pedalling at that point on my approach in anticipation of following the car across the roundabout.

Misjudgements should be expected but complete disregard for other road users shouldn't, especially if you're in a company vehicle which can be easily identified. It was 5.25 pm and I'm pretty sure his shift finished at 5.30 - he needed to rush to get home on time.

I would think am image concious company like UPS would take something like this very seriously. Especially from my experience of working for a large US company, they are super sensitive about bad publicity.

I've had plenty like that over the years. it's bad driving and putting the video in the public domain is IMO perfectly legitimate.

However, my response to that, in the interests of personal safety, would have been to brake as soon as the van started to overtake since it was clear that with the roundabout ahead there was a serious potential hazard to you.

As far as I can see, the van driver did nothing wrong. He got his front axles ahead of you a clear 80m before the island. That is a successful overtake in my book and I would be backing off to let him past.

There's no point racing him only to get pushed into the bushes. He'll be keeping an eye on the car ahead and the traffic on the island, not a cyclist he passed a few seconds ago.

If you think he's going to look in his left hand door mirror to check where you are, think again.

You were metaphorically 'behind' him as soon as he became visible in your peripheral vision.

As I mentioned on another thread, I wouldn't risk being a wheelchair user to prove a legal point, helmet cam or not.

Fair enough but I probably would have anyway.
