I am sorry but I did not know where to put this..

I am thinking of buying an I Pad 3 but need to know if I can use a USB connection to download routes from the I pad to my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. The young guy in the store was not sure if this was possible. I use Ride with GPS and Mymapride.

Not as far as I know. Its just simple connectivity if you used a sd card in the garmin but I am sure you cant copy off, never mind uploading

I looked into this very thing last year. It's a no I'm afraid. I ended up buying a netbook (basically a small laptop) that fits nicely into my panniers.

It's been done with an Edge 800, eventually...same method might work with other Garmins.
That won't work with a 60CSx.
Unlike later models, rhe 60CSx won't read routes from the SD card.
Routes have to be loaded to the internal memory, which means a direct USB link to the 60CSx and software that will do the loading. Software would be Garmin's own (Mapsource, trip & waypoint manager etc), GPSBabel or whatever.

It might be time to trade in the gps for something more modern.

And once you've over that hurdle you'd have to find a way of writing to the memory card. You could do it using something like a Three MiFi dongle - I don't know what's available in Denmark but you could probably get an unlocked one on eBay UK.

If you are upgrading......many of the newer systems like the Edge 810 have bluetooth built in and can link to most smartphones / Ipads etc

Just as a footnote to this.

I was testing whether I could upload to the microSD card on the Three MiFi via the web page interface (you connect to it as you would any other type of router). I tried a number of file uploader apps, but none of them worked (for a variety of reasons), the app that does work is the iCab browser. If simply use iCab to download the file from the website and then upload to the card on the MiFi. If you've produced the file in another app (eg iPlanMyRoute) you need to go through the extra step of uploading to dropBox (or emailing it) then opening in iCab.

Once uploaded simply pop the file into your gps.

I was thinking "wouldn't it be cool if Garmin made a gps with wifi?'. My method is clunkier but cheaper.

You could use the IPad as a GPS...............
