...at long last. Got my first payslip from the new job today, and am actually earning enough to pay tax - hence I may now ligitimately complain about the state of the country....;)

Welcome to the club, if you do really well you can get to pay the tax man 40%

or even 50%.

In fact for some higher earners on parts of their income, depending upon the amounts, you can have 60% marginal rates. At the other end of the scale you can also have the situation where someone's retired on a pension of £125 per week, and they might suffer an effective 100% tax on part of their income. That's the crazy world of badly drafted tax legislation and means testing for you!

I started paying tax last year - previous years I hadn't quite passed the tax threshold. Now I have to inform my bank:sad: as we had all our savings in my name for obvious reasons.

I very much doubt I'll ever reach that state!

Luckily, I don't seem to be earning enough to be over the threashold for paying back the student loan, so I'm still sponging off the nation in that respect... If I can just make it to whatever the cut off age is, I've won!

There is, you know, more to life than money. I expect your Mum keeps you a bit tight on pocket money, so you haven't worked it out yet....

I wouldnt know about pocket money i have been working since shortly after i left school and have been self employed for the last few years. It sounds like you have a lot more experience of living within the restraints of pocket money than me.

Ashame the college loan didnt seem to do you any good, instead of coming out of college all eager to take on the world you are happy to settle on crap pay and thinking of how to get out of paying back your college loan, great.
