On the way up from the Pub about an hour or so ago, I came across a fight. Now, this fight, it seemed like both the people knew each other, but still, I didn't want to get too close to it unless they set on me instead, so I couldn't see the people in detail. Also it was dark where they were.

So, from a distance, I phoned the Police and told them where it was. Unfortunately, as I was on the phone, they stopped and one of them walked off. The other went into a side street and was on his phone.

I was waiting for the Police to arrive, but as I was, a guy appeared and asked if there was anyone about. Because I had been too far away to really see who had done what, I did a terrible thing, I said the other guy was in the side street.

From this, the guy I had just been speaking too produced a pool cue and went to chase the other guy. It turned out to be the same guy as before. Bloody 'ell!!

I phoned the Police right there and then, complete with a description of Mr Pool Cue, but after quite a bit of running around from the two guys, he then walked off again.

It was only then that I got to talk to the guy being attacked, and I realised what was going on. He then disappeared, but still I waited for the Police, who finally arrived to tell me that they had been called by the guy who was attacked and they had info.

Now, here's the thing: I didn't know who anyone was, but should I feel rotten about directing the guy with the pool cue back to his victim?? I didn't know who was who or what he had in his hand until it was too late.

For all you knew, upto the time he produced the pool cue, he could have been wanting to help the other person.
How would you have felt if he was trying to help and you gave no help in finding him?

Yeah, he seemed as if he was concerned (I say I did a terrible thing, but that was only in hindsight).

Still, I just think, what if it had been a knife or similar?

You'd no way of knowing, until he started what his intentions were.
You might have even gone with him, to show him where to find him. What then?
Also the chance that he picked you because he'd seen you earlier.

You cannot always get everything right

What you need to to is look at the outcome overall.

Did phoning the Police help - probably did a second call about a fight, reinforcing the victim's call would have raised its priority

Did waiting around and making the second call help - absolutely

Did giving a stranger information in good faith help.... probably not, but chances are it did no real harm and didn't make any diference to the overall outcome

On balance your input was positive so don't beat yourself up about it

I'd probably have done the same and then ended up feeling as bad as you did.
IMO its better than the 'don't get involved' culture we seem to have nowadays and at least you got a look at 'Mr Pool Cue' so if corroborating ID is needed by the police they can ask you (mind you after I'd had a few beers I probably wouldn't recognise the bloke again)

You were brave enough to hang around - reminds me of the time (many years ago) my mum and dad were walking home from the pub and 2 guys were scrapping, my dad (no doubt full of bravado and Tennents Special) waded in to split them up - the 2 guys stopped fighting each other and beat my dad up instead! My mum gave the old man such a rollocking I felt really sorry for him, even if he was bladdered at the time.

You have no idea of the context and the situation could have ended up much much worse for you.
