Aye, just witnessed our usual horrific school run.

And remember driving parents, that note that you get every month in your child's bag about not pulling into the school car park doesn't apply to you. No - it applies to everybody else. You're special. You needs are unique. You go ahead.

I remember when WMnr used to do the school run to his local high school. Even then the reaction of other parents was astounding - telling me how they would never let their offspring cycle to school as the roads are so dangerous... Then there was the reaction of his sixth-form to him cycling 13-miles each way on a daily basis... Cue bottom jaws of many a staff member hitting the ground as theu thought how far it was to cycle.. and wouldn't he be shattered & fall asleep in calss. Well, no actually, the ride used to get him out in the fresh air so that when he arrived at said educational palace he was more awake & alert than many a kid who had just rolled out of bed into Mummy or Daddy's 4x4 & dropped off at the gates every day..

Conversation overheard by Mrs-LC between yummy-mummy WAG wannabe and headteacher of the Little-Commuters' school:

Head: "Please don't park here"
YMWAG: "Why not?"
Head: "Well, it's on double yellow lines, you're blocking the school entrance and making it dangerous for everyone else."
YMWAG (now purple faced and screaming): "You can't tell me where to park, you're only the f'ing head, I'll park where I want, it's f'ing ridiculous that there's no parking here, etc. etc."

.. And YMWAG was from the alleged "posh" estate.

Sadly, the Head gave up. My response would have been, "maybe I can't tell you where to park, but I'm sure nice Mr Policeman can so I'll make sure he's here tomorrow and he can explain about double yellow lines to you."

At one of WMnr's old schools, the head used to periodically ask for plod to come out and have a word with/ticket the worst of the parking offenders. This had the desired effect for a few days, but no more than that. He also used to regularly put a note in the school newsletter that went out to parents every Friday. That had no effect. ;)

Oh yeah, we've had all the regular notes. Not that it does much good.

One of the schools on the "posh" estate, a new build, had a nice drive through loop thing to make it more convenient for the YMWAGs to drive their offspring the half mile to school. But so many of them (and their Division 2 footballing hubbies) misused it that, after repeated pleas and threats failed, the Head closed it so they now all have to park outside the school.

Cue outraged letters to the local newspaper about their "rights" to drive their kids a few hundred metres to school. On a new-build estate with good wide footpaths, ped crossings and all that. ;)

As one who lives directly opposite an infant/primary school. I hear exactly what you are saying.

Our council installed double yellow lines, but as they are not enforced, no-one gives a stuff. My street, directly opposite, is the unofficial car park. The headteacher has given up sending out notes asking them to be considerate.

Because the road is on a bend, and the parking is so inconsiderate, someone, one day is going to get hurt. Then stand back and wait for the 'blame game' to start, to the effect of why didn't the council do something.

Ymwag - Is that welsh ?
hadn't thought of that .. sounds like it should be though. I was just abbreviating Yummy Mummy WAG (Wife and Girlfriend); it's all a bit "footballer's wives liftestyle choices" on the estate I was talking about.

But maybe ymwag is a Welsh word meaning exactly that. ;)

Pester Power....

I read about one head who rana ssseries of classes on road safety and then got the children to act as the "marshalls" pointing out to their parents and the other drivers what they were doing wrong!

Oooh, yes, loving it! This same sort of pester power is great used on red light jumpers, be they cyclists or drivers.
