Back in the sixties my parents used to have one of the Irish weekly papers sent over by an aunt. The agony column was exactly like that, "Should we hold hands after a month?" and similar issues. I still remember the dire warnings about the dangers of heavy petting, and hilariously in view of what we know now, many respondents were advised to go and see a priest to discuss their sexual angst.
My first ever proper job was in east London and I had a colleague who had formerly been the "Sister Marion" at LRC who make Marigold gloves and Durex. She use to amuse me with stories about some of the letters she had received, the most common being from couples in Ireland begging her to send them some samples as condoms were illegal. She said the most unpleasant part of the job was opening the letters containing condoms that had failed in use; they had to devise a special sealable postage pack for those. She had one bloke who wanted to buy all the rejects as he wanted to be the first to cross the channel on a raft made from condoms.
