I've been with them for years, they've never messed up, always there when i need them, fair rates on personal loans, branches locally to me etc etc etc. I cant fault them on my service (mind, ive never been overdrawn in 30 years )

He used to work at branches in and around Solihull.

The natwest are playing a close second in annoying bank adverts IMO.

Lloyds are OK on a local level - get on ok with the branch - although not keen on the general company way of doing things.

My mortgage is with Halifax, but will move it at earliest opportunity - nothing but aggro.

Halifax are worth checking out for contents insurance if you have a bunch of bikes. We've got about £10000 worth of bike cover for about £110 a year.

+1. Not really had any problems. The other month a few too many direct debits came out, which I didn't have the money for in that account. They paid them still and when I noticed (later that day) I paid the money across from my savings and wasn't charged anything for it.

Did once complain about some charges when buying foreign currency. I didn't realise that I would be charged for buying it at the post office on my debit card. They mucked me around a bit, saying it was the post office who charged it, then they changed their minds. They gave me the fee back after I wrote a quick letter so not end of the world.

They can be a bit annoying at the branch though, always wanting to offer something or the manager wanting to see you (if you've got any money )

That's true

"Have you got 5 minutes for a quick account review?"

me: "You gave me one last week! Stop pestering me!"

Strangely enough, it's not the case that 'they're all the same'. They really aren't.

The private ones are all equally rapacious, I'm sure - but they have different agendas/business models. First Direct, for one example, are a great bank - reliable, competent, even quite innovative in some ways (they'll text you, free, if you're approaching your od limit, for just one eg) - so long as you're a solid, reliable, middling income customer. Don't get poor or unpredictable tho' - they just don't want customers like that, and they can get very punitive, very quick.

If you want competence and some kind of humanity, I think your choice is pretty limited. The Co-op being one, Nationwide another. And if you have any money, Santander is certainly worth considering - being Euro-based, they've suffered less as Sterling has fallen off a cliff, and so offer reasonably good rates.

We pulled all ours out of the Halifax just recently. We put up with going in to see their "investment specialist" or whatever they are called. We went round the level of risk exercise and came out as "low risk" customers. Plonker then went on to try to sell us - Give us all your dosh, you might get some return (maybe) but all the capital is at risk too. Just how stupid did he think we were? Low risk my *rse. ;)

What little we have is stashed in Santander or Nationwide now.

I hate Halifax too

Oh s**t - I've just noticed an unauthorised transaction on my Halifax account - the second time in less than a year!

Some bastard somewhere is leaking my details and/or cloning my card.

I'm going to have to go down to the nearest Link machine now and take out enough cash to keep me going until I can get a new card, then I'm going to have to get my current card cancelled and request a refund.

Halifax - I'm not a happy bunny...

but these radio studio ones, please Halifax have you no shame or staff members with personality and TV presence?

You're not being ironic you're just cr@p, spend my overdraft fees on something useful!

I am happy to say that I shall be leaving that sh*t-strewn excuse for a bank/building society. Many moons ago, I joined the Bank of Scotland - a descent friendly bunch, and then they were bought by Halifax.

Those crooks are only interested in how much they can screw their customers over, any overdraft request was met with an attempt to meet their personal goals through peddling their ill-thought (and gotten) wares: credit cards, loans, etc and this was when I was at university.

Now one has to pay up to £5 a day for an overdraft charge, and their credit card rates are an abomination. These are legalised loan sharks.

These people are now so far removed from their original purpose which was to act as a building society, something that was beneficial to the nation, that one should be able to call them out via trading standards.

As soon, as my mini-arrangement has been sorted, I will cease all ties with these crooks.
