Well all i can say is, with what i saw today. Never EVER use this.
NOTE i stay in the same place going through the pinch point i only change place after it as its a bend and i was still heading straight.

It wasn't you - looking at the vid it's the Mini driver who's attempting to go for a gap that isn't there.

The question is, would the driver have acted differently if you took a primary position?

My example can be seen here -

Eh? What technique?
Did you watch the videos?
The idea is that you can stay secondary but put your hand palm up or down like me and gaz and this informs traffic not to overtake. In doing this the driver should not overtake and you dont have to move intro primary while going through a pinch point.
That's a rubbish technique if you ask me. I've tried it, and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. The problem is that many drivers won't have a clue what you're trying to say to them, so every time you do it there's a percentage who won't get it. And others who won't like it.

Better to get in their way and then they're not able to try to pass. That doesn't need any explaining.
I thought it would try it as it had some glowing reviews. Well not again lol

You were not in primary anywhere near early enough IMO - although they did look like they were going for a high speed last ditch attempt.
Think cyclegaz's example vid may be slightly skewed being a learner who was always going to hang back/ take longer still it felt more controlling than just obstructive.

The 'wait there' signal is a difficult one to justify.

My typical technique when going through a pinch point and I want cars behind to wait:
 1. Shoulder check.
 2. Shoulder check repeatedly and keep arm out and palm facing back.
 3. Move into primary when there is a safe gap in the traffic.
 4. Shoulder check to make sure the person behind isnt going to rear end you.
 5. After pinch point, move back into secondary as soon as possible.
 6. Thank the driver behind with either a thumbs up or wave of thanks.
The wave at the end is either met by a wave of thanks in return or just an ignore. It is ocassionally followed with a 'Get on the path statement' but I havent had any of these recently relating to pinch points.

Tbf no technique is perfect. I've taken primary position before only for the vehicle behind to pass me closley once past pinch points or narrow streches of road. I like the idea of the hand signal but will mostly stick to taking primary position. Using hand signals you leave the choice with the traffic behind you; taking primary, you make the desision on your saftey.

I take primary then if they hoot or piss me off go to lowest gear
Its my way of winning friends and influencing people
