For anyone else trying to watch this on iPlayer, there are subtitles on there too. Even after years watching Scots on TV and working with them, this show pushes the envelope!

I watched it last night. In my opinion it was the worst example of middle class poverty porn that I've seen in an age - Jeremy Kyle x 1000.

Barnet,
It is nothing different to any sink estate up and down the country. There will always be a percentage of the residents who are wayward, drunk, drugged up, to dim for their own good with no ambition and no incentive to try to improve their lot, except to have children at an early age and get their own council flat, if they are lucky. It is cheap telly that purports to be serious but is just sensationalist.

Well I did watch it. I would have liked subtitles. Good job I could understand the narrator. What with the shrieking, crying, swearing etc, it was very difficult to understand.

That description pretty well sums up Eastenders for those of us in the northern latitudes.

Living in western latitiudes, I would have trouble with Ea' ssenders. As it is, the first note of the theme tune and I switch it off.

However saying that, for a group of people who seemed to be all unemployed they all seemed to live quite well, no shortage of booze, cigarettes and big screen TVs, and then there was that one who I guess had not worked for many many years (if ever) took his family to Majorca on there hols. Great to see our taxes being so well spent.
.

There is quite a long thread about this on one of the other forums I post on and after last weeks episode I posted a comment how noone had shown any indication of wanting to work or looking for work. I got this response from someone there.

"i used to work with the guy in it called gordon (the one with the big family) had a good job in irvine untill the bosses shafted us and shut the company (which was still making a profit) i now how hard it was to get another job in the area so knowing him like i do he would have been trying to get a job"

Obviously I have no way of knowing how true that is but I strongly suspect the programme makers will be editing it to make it seem as bad as they can.

However that does not get away from my early statement - it is a total embarrassment and I am just so glad it is not being shown nationally without people having to hunt for it on Sky/iplayer etc.

I think they made it clear enough, though they didn't dwell on it. There's a thread which has touched on this in P+L and it's difficult to get a balance, as ever!

I thought the show actually started out in a way which made you really warm to the main characters. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence knows the situation in such estate is far from easy, and the people featured in this show do face much adversity.

But then you are left feeling let down by some of the people as you see them make entirely avoidable errors

And lastly, and I'm a smoker, but I was amazed at the amount of smoking that goes on. Many are smoking almost constantly, in the house, in front of kids. And fags don't come cheap!!!!

I don't understand how people can watch this program for entertainment purposes. I find my self feeling sorry for the vast majority of the people, whom have been dealt a poor hand in life, I for one can't comment on the issue, let alone criticise them, as i know nothing of what they have one through. It seems they have been let down from a young age, many being bought up in care. It's social exclusion of the highest order in my opinion.
