I went for a gentle short ride today...

Don't tell those "Southern Softies" we have nice roads, they will all be oop here causing havoc like they do in that London.
It's grim down south for cyclists

56 miles today in windy, driech East Lothian. Apart from a too close for comfort pass by a local bus company all was well. Inclement weather here in East Lothian makes for a more enjoyable cycle.

The south isn't grumpy at all. I generally get waves from all the cyclists I see out on my roads...
Except for last weekend. There was a sportive last weekend, and not a single one of them (the number plate gave them away) raised a hand or gave a nod. So I passed about a hundred miserable, focussed, unhappy people in an hour.

Usually it's not like that.

Tbh I don't give a stuff about the waving of cyclists but the weaving of motorists bothers me a good deal.

You have to try and be sympathetic, they are sitting and getting fatter, burning expensive petrol and confined to grey roads with a ton of restrictions on where they can go, at what speed and when. Whereas we are the exact opposite, getting fitter and much better in bed* the more we cycle.

I'm always jealous of cyclists whenever I have to drive.

* Reportedly from Mrs KB.

I haven't started cycling to work yet this year (too cold - there's still ice early on) but even driving I've seen a considerable increase of other drivers talking/texting whilst driving, not indicating, pulling out when they should be giving way (at junctions and roundabouts), red-light jumping etc. etc. They don't seem to give a toss or have any regards for others' safety, and the authorities/police just don't do enough to ensure standards don't drop to an anarchic level.

Where I live (Oslo) there's only about 700,000 people, god knows what it must be like in larger cities back home. :headshake:

Actually I don't. I find it impossible to sympathise with the sort of twunt who rams another car from behind, perhaps it was the lack of hi-viz, nor those whose upper body is so atrophied they cannot turn the wheel enough to overtake a cyclist by more than a few inches on an otherwise empty road.

splains why driving your seven is always enjoyable. for the brief period I had access to one I found it noisy, hot and yet simultaneously cold, draughty, uncomfortable and stuck in exactly the same queues as everyone else. apart from a couple of glorious spring Sunday mornings before the A264 lost most of its NSL sections. ;)

Move (further) south, deeper into West Sussex! Had a wonderful ride today as you'll see on Facebook. Of course, we did go out quite early, leaving Bognor at 7.30am and reaching Goodwood just after 9am. Had a splendid breakfast, struck up a conversation with a solo lady cyclist from Felpham (about my age/level/skills/speed - new cycling buddy? Yay!) who showed us a fantastic route back home. Back by midday. Not a lot of traffic on the roads but what there was was invariably polite and patient and gave us lots of space, including a number of white van drivers. We were both gobsmacked and appreciative - lots of friendly waves. (Maybe Easter is the real season of goodwill? Nah.....)

Went for a scoot around the local park. People gave me a wide berth and some waited until there was an appropriate place to overtake. Even got acknowledged by another cyclist.

Am I doing something wrong?

You should have been wearing a helmet.
Or you shouldn't have been wearing a helmet if you were wearing a helmet.

Some of my clubmates and I were out for a 50 mile ride yesterday. Lots of close passes, angry honks, and seriously dangerous overtakes by motorists. We deduced it was because they could not be outside enjoying a glorious day in the west country and were actually on their way home for some DIY.
