Purveyor of fine nonsense
This morning on Radio 4 I heard that the price of oil is predicted to reach $150/barrel this year, and that petrol could well be £1.50 per litre.

In addition, when I went into Fareham town centre just now on my way home to do a bit of shopping, I had to chain the bike to a lamp post because all the cycle parking was full ... that is absolutely unheard of! I also saw loads of people on bikes on my journey. I know it's been the warmest day of the year so far today, but I have never seen that many cyclists out and about.

I wonder if the "get off the road" mentality will soon reach tipping point as more and more people get on bikes ...

Lets hope so, but I've got a feeling it could get worse before it reaches 'critical mass'.

Yes, I can see a time when infuriated motorists vent all their anger on the increasing numbers of cyclists ...

I nearly vented my anger at a fellow cyclist this morning. He cut me up from my left as I was pulling off on green and nearly rear ended the cyclist in front of me. Prat. He saw me looking, and shaking my head with "the look" and then started to look a little worried.

But yes, oil is going to increase in price with all the middle east revolutions and unrest. I think Shell and BP have interests in Lybia for example. Cycling is going to look like one sweet proposition to many.

Derby City Centre has had about 20 new bike racks spring up lately, a very pleasing sight, i'm hoping able-to-but-non-cyclists will take notice and maybe consider a bike, especially with pump prices. I doubt i'd be far wrong if i said at least 50% of workers in the city centre are within easy cycling range of home-work-home. It really is just laziness with a lot of people. Strangely, i didn't see many cyclists out on the fine day today, which did surprise me.

Given the choice, I'd rather cyclists not seeing than drivers not seeing any day of the week. Get out your cars and on to your bikes, you learn by doing so do.

Completely agree with you, it was just rude and prolly risked bruising at worst (for the guy in front of me). Had it been a car, van, bus etc... broken bones fear of god stuff if it goes wrong.

I asked one stroppy driver if he'd prefer it if all the cyclists were in their cars.

Have used this myself a few times Norm.. seems to shut them up when confronted with this question, normally accompanied with a gormless look by the driver as if it can't compute in their tiny moton mind.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether roads round here wouldn't flow faster if there wasn't the minute (as in very small, not as in 60 seconds) delay which cyclists cause, as there's very few snarl ups. But it did seem to make him question his position.

Back to the OP, though, today was the first day that I didn't see any cyclists on my morning commute, and I think there was only one this evening. Given the glorious day, which was just as forecast, I was expecting to see many more.

Round here (St Albans) I have noticed a significant increase in the numbers of cyclists I encounter on my 8 mile commute, even in the early morning when I ride. Used to see maybe one cyclist a week, now I'm seeing four or five a day.

Diesel was £1.37 a litre as i passed the petrol station in Stourbridge this morning. train busier than usual even though it's the school holidays. It'll be interesting to see what happens next week when the schools are back.

I don't think I could go on a trip anywhere without seeing a cyclist unless it was at about 4 am. In fact I could probably see one (in the distance not going by my house) just by going and standing at my front door for a few minutes. Pause ... just went and did that ... took 4 minutes until I saw one.
