Sometimes I cycle in to work along side a canal. I was wondering if it might be possible to cycle ON the canal in a really cold winter? Anyone done it?

As a child I remember mucking around on some shallow ponds on Dorney Common. We were fine but my Dad did set the ice cracking a little. It would have to be a very very long cold spell for me to risk it. Apart from anything presumably a bike has only two points contacting with the ice (unless you are going sideways:rolleyes: always possible on ice:whistle:)... whereas the advice is to spread the weight over as wide a surface as possible.

A water bike would be more useful in these times of Climate Change. Ice is a thing of the past....

I can't speak for canals but when I lived in Sweden people would cycle on the ice road when the harbour froze. They mostly rode their normal town bikes, but then again northern Swedes have no fear ^_^
