Ice not nice

This is why I've been walking (and falling over) for the last ten days. My usual route is sheet ice from start to finish.

I've been in the car for the past week after memories of my black ice tumble in January. I'm not willing to take the chance any more because the offs really take their toll these days. Back on the bike tomorrow!

Have just got back from town. I used the main road in. It's ok but the gutters are full of icy snow so there is less room for cars and bikes. On the return I used back roads. The frozen snow bits are ok but where it is melting it's very treacherous and smooth so I was walking a lot. Full co-operation between other users though.

Looking at the canals around Brum this morning i think you'd be able to get back off it if you were to fall in, must be very thick ice on them.

Glasgow is definitely improving by the hour, and I am hoping to get back on the bike tomorrow. One fly in the ointment is that I'm not feeling great at the moment (shivers and dicky tummy). If I can't get at least one bike ride in this week I'll not be happy!

I actually took the road route today, rather than the Trans Pennine for half of it - it's got quite dodgy in places - hard gravel then ice, then complete sheet ice, on adverse cambers. Snow studs are handling it very well though.

Hoping to get the road bike out tomorrow - we'll see.

I'm hoping to be back on the roadie tomorrow too, I would of today but couldn't be bothered last night to switch my lights back off the mtb.

Getting fed up of an all road commute so decided to go back to the Ely trail today. Had to walk/slide for ½ a mile until I could ride across the field, so back on the road, blugh.

No frozen bits today though so getting warmer here in Cardiff

Is the Ely Trail finished yet? Last time I rode it from the Penarth Road end it came to a stop near Sanatorium road and left me dodging traffic on the main roads to get over Ely Bridge.

Its a bit rude really as the signs say its open all the way to St Fagans.Wouldnt be ideal if you had kids with you dodging up the Cowbridge road dual carriageway.

Well just to pi$$ you all off.....................

After a week of on off rain, and some very cold (for southern Spain) nights (down to 5c), and a helluva storm on Sunday and Tuesday nights, today has been clear blue sky's, wall to wall sunshine and 26c.

The trouble is everywhere is still so wet and filthy.

I ride the short section from St Fagans to Bwlch Rd as I normally cut through Fairwater to the Taff trail. I think funding for completing the link to the Bay has dried up

Definitely melting in Bristol too ... my son decided it was so tropical that he wasn't wearing either his coat or gloves cycling home from school ... that would be a tropical 4 degrees then!! Still it was better than our journey to school only met about 4 cars but one sun-blinded (not his fault) and the other 3 couldn't see out of their windows at all (well if you don't count the bit that was about 10 x 2 inches!).

LOTS of nice pools of water ready to turn to sheet ice

Before that I was pondering swapping back from the MTB but I think for this week at least I'll stay on knobblies

There seems to be a pretty decent thaw going on here atm, it's still about 5[sup]o[/sup]C.

It's thawed enough for me to put the snow studs up to full pressure, but I'm not sure I'm getting rid of the studs quite yet.
