Anyone considering winter/ ice/ studded tyres at the moment for there skinny wheeled steed?

I'm thinking about getting a studded front tyre, as thats the one that i had problems with in the snow and ice last year on my fixed gear, but don't have a clue what tyre to go for.

Any experiences or suggestions on this?

What sort of clearance have you got?
32 being the thinnest they do in studded tyres.
I have the Marathon Winters which are 35mm wide, already fitted but not used yet.

What's the best way to measure clearance acurrately?

Disclaimer: I've seen this done before (Winnipeg), but never tried it myself. :O

edit: Slightly madder but 700c version. You will not easily find Robertson screws in the UK.

Just popped my pair of 32mm Nokian A10s on the bike, currently rocking the 3-speed hub geared rear wheel so not fixed gear right now.

Definitely feels a bit slower! Not sure if it just needs more pressure in the tyres (staying with family, only have hand pump), if it's the studs or the little rubber tentacles all over the new tyres, but it sounds like riding on gravel!

if you've got a disk-braked hybrid, you can fasten cable ties around with wheel, the little block bit acting as a stud. apparently…

It certainly does, I described it as sounding like Snap Crackle and Pop
Mine are currently gathering dust in the spare room, no need to use them yet at all.

it's when they stop going snap crackle and pop you need to worry, as you're riding on sheet ice

Yeah I bought Schwalbe Marathon Winters for my Whyte Kings Cross, did the 40k bedding in road miles no problem. Just need the ice and snow now

I bought a Whyte Kings Cross this week.

It's a great bike with loads of clearance (compared to my Charge Plug) for spikey tyres. Not sure I can afford any right now though, but the Marathon Winters look good; so hopefully the ice will hold off til at least the end of the month!

Schwalbe uk were brilliant, when I asked where I could buy some replacement studs, they sent me some free of charge
I actually bought the Whyte to fit the 35mm tyres, plus it is a lot more stable, and I don't notice any difference in having a alloy fork.
