Some time in the next 12 months I'll be treating myself to a N+1. I don't do carbon at all....forks, frames, bars, seat posts or wheels...nothing at all.

I'm thinking colnago after seeing one in the flesh at a recent audax...gorgeous.

Can't decide whether to go fixed or gears so ideas for both appreciated, probably max at £4k.
What type of riding is the bike going to be used for? Steep hills? Flat rides? Touring? Short fast rides? Long and slow? Flying with the bike? Commuting? All weather conditions or summer best? And so on ...

I know why you don't want carbon, but that doesn't mean you have to choose steel. It doesn't mean you can't choose steel, but there are lovely titanium and aluminium bikes out there too!

Anyway - take a look at this post to see what I fancy ...

True, but I want to choose steel....my thread my rules...:gun:...:addict:...:smooch:

Just thought i'd mention the book "It's all about the bike". It's essentially all about Robert Penn building his "dream" bike from bike fit to finishing touches. He done it all for 3.5k and had everything done to fit him! Also it was kitted out with Super Record so cant be far off your budget.

IMO, if you are after your dream bike then you need to get it custom made to fit YOU!!!

This way you will have your dream bike because it will fit you and ONLY you.

Good luck, i'd love to be in your position. One can never have enough bikes.

Well your carbon comment was redundant then!

So, given that you want steel and that you liked the Colnago, you won't want unpainted stainless steel then?

What about my other questions?
Given where I live...hilly hilly, nice fast (eventually) rides to the coast and mostly dry days as I'd like to be mudguard free for this bike...OMG...dare I say it?....a....a....summer bike.

I'm in no rush for this bike, it's more of a long term self congrats gift for all the hard work I'll have put in over 4 and a half years of changing careers, changing self and massively improving long term prospects for my family and I.

Well, whatever you buy - it sounds like it will be something I wouldn't feel safe locking up outside a cafe without a large dog chained to it!

As for stainless steel (953) - even though paint would not be necessary, you could always have a nice paint job if you wanted to spend the extra money.

That's the thing Colin, I really don't know what I want yet, I may end up with a Rohloff heavy duty beastie. I'm kinda focus exercising at the mo.

Yeah well.....I've told you about them Bromptons.
I pushed his Brompton out of a cafe in Hebden Bridge and thought the steerer had come loose, the front end handling felt that odd!

I think they are great for what they were originally designed for, but I would never choose to ride one unless I needed a folding bike to take on public transport or for storing safely where I was going to.

That's what I used it for Colin, you know where my destinations were...not places you'd want to leave a bike locked up outside for 12 hours.

I can understand people commuting or going to the pub on Bromptons, but long distance hilly rides ...

If you can only have one bike, fair enough, but I think I would always want a more conventional bike for the harder rides.

Must be a city thing Colin as i've not seen one yet.

The day i get passed up a hill on a country lane by one of those things will be the start of the apocalypse. FACT.
