Each to their own but group tours won't give you the experiences.

Travellin solo does not mean travelling alone and isolated. Lots of people to talk to, sometimes travel with for a bit, share experiences with, etc.

when I travel I tend not to plan, just city to fly into and book hotel for 1st night (as most country immigrations need an address). Then, whilst there are the obvious places, talking to others is where you find the amazing things to go see. One of many examples: I was in one city and talking to people they suggested a town in the foothills of the Himalayas a couple of days travel away. It was the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile and when I arrived by chance end of a massive Buddhist conference and next day an amazing (protest) march the anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day. Loads of Buddhist Monks carrying banners protecting against China massive and marching down the mountain. https://nogoodnamesleft.net/tibetan-national-uprising-day/. No tour is ever going to get you such experiences, only by travelling and talking to others.

I thought that they had always used a drum machine and that he was a fantasist. I've actually met the lead singer of the Sisters of Mercy without realizing it!

Depends a lot on the country.

Eg Peru & Bolivia lots of women travelling independently. In India (raised by the OP) all independent travellers will get continual scam attempts but they are very obvious and not an issue. It's fairly safe but women will get verbally hassled a bit more but nobody I talked to felt threatened physically.

There is always "trouble" being reported from many countries. But the issues are invariably local and you just don't go there whilst there is unrest in the locality.

When I was in La Paz there were protests happening and you just don't go to the areas the protests are in. In Lima most of the city is "inadvisable" so you make sure you stick to the couple of districts that are OK.

One bus trip meant to ne an 8 hr journey ended up taking 24 hrs because bus was stopped by "protests'. A nuisance but interesting.

Northern Peru is the main drugs route for northbound smuggling (and where the "barons live") so you just don't ask direct questions about it and stay polite at the police check points. India fairly recently. Other countries are not a massive challenge, you just make sure you are aware of the situations and and accordingly. Of course some have issues eg get pissed in a nightclub and walk home at 03:00 and predictable outcome and that gets reported and gets publicity. Be unselective getting a taxi in Lima and you'll have big problems. But it's not hard to be aware and lower your risk.
