Identify this crank bit

I was rifding along this morning when 14 miles in I nearly came off my bike after my crank arm sheared off. It is a less than a year old Eddy Merckx EMX-1. Any idea the name of this part?

Ask the sales assistant what it's called when you take it back to the shop under warranty.

I think it is a crank arm bolt off the shimano 105 groupset.

I bought the bike from Chain Reaction Cycles online and have emailed. I tried to get the part at Halfords but they don't stock.
LBS shops tomorrow for me.

They can post me the bit out and I will fit it, if I haven't bought one in the meantime!

Looks like the pre-load.

That bit isn't really suppose to hold anything on, its used to apply force to the crank arm to pre-load the bottom bracket before the 2 bolts on the crank are tightened to around 13newton Metres.

Looks like in your case the 2 bolts had worked loose, then this bit held on for a while.

No, it is the crank arm bearing preload adjuster. As has already been said, it is not meant to hold the crank in place, just to remove any play from the bottom bracket bearings before the left hand crank is clamped to the axle.
