If being paid to cycle wasn't enough...

Not if you want it tax free. My accountant passes the 20p a mile I put on the books as a taxable expense, no problem, but that's the most HMRC will allow, self employed or otherwise.

Most of my mileage is by car (sadly) and the same applies but at the 45p a mile rate.

Of course you can pay yourself whatever you like, and charge clients whatever the market will stand, but any more than HMRC limits is taxable.
Thanks. I had no idea I could actually benefit from having a mileage allowance that I pay myself. I was more just mucking about but you have made me think it might actually be worth doing. Cheers.

The times when I cycle to work I don't get paid for doing it, other than I'm saving petrol / bus fares by doing so. My employer does not subsidise my travel to work in any way and I wouldn't expect them to do so really.

I suspect this is the situation most cycle commuters live with. I can't see that changing.

Another thought - if they are going to pay people for cycling to work, surely people who walk to work should be paid too!?

i raised the C2w when i was in the forces and was told that "we dont supoort it because we give a generous home to duty allowance for travel by car" WTF?

so lemme get this straight, C2W allows soldiers to train, which is kinda good obviously, reduces costs etc and you would rather they come via car? It one of the many reasons i left, as there seemed to be a fair bit of backward thinking, and those who still thought british leyland was a major car company and thay we lived inthe 70's. I even had one arogant officer tel me to put my bike ina skip, "stop messing about" and go running.

remarkabley ill informed for an RAMC captain i thought.

Where I work it is crap for cyclists, there are not even signed up for C2W scheme.
Poor facilities for locking and securing bikes etc.
Parking is always a nightmare, you would think they would be encouraging cycling.
It's not it is a tiny firm it's a horticultural college with sites all over London run by Enfield council.
I wonder if there is a way to put pressure on to them as they always like to think that they are green and eco' friendly.

Is your employer council or private?

If it's council I'm sure they have to abide to some cycling policy or other. Hopefully some of the council workers can comment.

When I say we get paid it isn't "actual" money. We get a token which can be redeemed against cycling items which the company order or you can turn them in for high street vouchers.

They do have "foot soldiers" which is the same scheme for people who walk to work you're right. Also I feel quite guilty as I didn't realise how good we have it. We have fairly secure and multiple bike sheds which are lit and covered by cctv, we have lockers, fresh towels, large changing rooms and showers. From the sounds of it this is a lot more than many other reasonable size companies...

That is amazing you are so lucky!
What company is that?

It's a IT company which unless your in the industry or a geek your unlikely to know.
I get told I'm well off, but its same as anything, its what I'm used to so don't really appreciate it so much.. The company is cool however and treats the staff and customers very well.

We have secure indoor cycle parking which is heated and features CCTV, the company provides a mechanic to undertake routine maintenance and checks. We have a dry room for our clothes. A full office gym with qualified trainers helping us reach our goals and classes during work time, sports massage, showers with shower gell provided, free breakfast of your choice and fruit on your desk each day. If I am undertaking a charity event or race I get the day off without it impacting my holiday allowance. They also financially support my cycling.
I have posted some pictures if your interested, but It's not a big deal imho.

Just asked how to claim for mileage at my work and got a "never happened before, don't know" answer.
Will update you with my progress or otherwise.

(2 x 50 miles from work placement to home).
