Someone remembered Brian Sewell, when a monument to Princess Diana was mooted, saying it would be better to spend the money on hospitals and the like. When a reporter said "But the people want it...", Sewell replied, "Well, people are idiots..."

The problem with democracy is, of course, letting the people decide anything....
