Since the car's over 10 years old, can you sell it to someone with a car less than 10 years old who wants a new car? Say 500 quid; they get £1000 scrap discount on their new car (saving them money) and you get a lot more than £60. Or are there rules against that sort of thing?
Good idea ;), unfortunately they have had to had the car registered for a year to qualify .

And to think I have just spent a few weeks looking for a cheap car with a known history from someone trustworthy.
Got one now.

Hire cars are fine and companies only worry about damage. If you pay the accident damage waiver then they don't even care about that either.

You could also use a friend's car if you have one who is trusting enough to put you on their insurance.

I sold my last car in 1997, haven't regretted it once. I'm not anti car, there have been times in my life when it wouldn't have been a practical option, I just wish more people would at least consider it.
On the odd occasion that I hire I get a small van (Ford Connect?) drives like a car, deisel economy comparable with a smallish petrol car and I get cheap weekend rates. It also provides somewhere to get changed and occasionaly get a kip and I don't have to hide what I'm using it for, I ride to the hire company to collect it and stick the bike in the back there.

Why not hire a Van?

Don't scrap it, you'll get effe all for it. I had a Rover estate (4 years old) that in Jan of this year decided it needed a new head casket, a new turbo, new brake pipes, a new clutch and some other stuff. The bill was going to be £4k more thant he car was worth! So thought fook that it's for the bin. Scrap yards offred £50 for it... got £1000 off a guy for it as he wanted the leather seats and other stuff... if I broke it my self would have got more! With the cash for the I would have paid on getting the rover fixed I bought a 57 plate zafira (need the massive boot for the dogs)... but a 4 year old car getting crushed,a nd folks wonder why rover went to the wall!
