They do have bike racks but out the front (I work in a supermarket) and I don't trust the general public with my bike (I've seen the sorts that hang around outside) if there was somewhere slightly more secure then I would not hesitate riding in I will have a word with HR and see what they say.

To make my day worse the spotty youth with BO I was sat behind on the bus turns out works here and is sat on the till in front of me

Be interesting to see the source for that. For a start, I thought urinals etc was based on number of staff rather than footprint. (Imagine the number of toilets at an Amazon warehouse!!!!). I think Greg is right, unless requested as part of the planning application (ie if you want to build an office block you'd better provide parking) I don't think an employer has any duty to provide parking either for cars or bikes.

To go back to topic (following my slightly flippant response upthread). I'd just try to have conversation with HR about whether or not they want staff to cycle (most are waking up to the fact that it makes you healthier and more alert). If the answer is yes I'm fairly sure an accommodation will be reached even if the bike is stored in a corner of HR out of the way.

there is legislation on new office buildings but nothing on existing demises.

A bike not a huge object, it should be relatively simple for you and the employer to work out a solution.
true dat. Unfortunately 20 bicycles aren't quite such a simply problem to solve. Especially when folk want their carbon fibre loveliness to be secure and dry. The trick is to come up with a solution that will scale.

GG an employer has a duty to supply appropraite parking for employee cycles. FACT, forget the term duty of care as that can be missleading as it applys elsewhere. Every place of work will have car parking spaces alloted to it and the numvber of spaces depends upon the footprint of the building as is the case with number of urinals, toilets, wash basins etc. So obviously size matters ....
Er...

Nope.

HR, parking spaces, toilets, what next holiday and sick pay.^_^ Do not ever try being self employed as you will likely get none of those.

Having run a company and moved to different premises during my tenure, I cam confirm that the office had no parking allotted to it, nor did the company have any obligation to provide parking spaces for any of the staff, including me as MD.

The previous office did have parking, but not enough for all employees, which to be honest was just a faff. Too many 'discussions' about who did and didn't get a space and the rights and wrongs thereof. I was glad to be shot of parking.

To the OP I was going to suggest that a folding bike might be an answer to stow under ones desk, but as you later revealed that you worked in a supermarket, I guess desks are few and far between. At my local supermarket, there always seem to be a fair crop of BSO's locked up, so is that an option. The locks do look flimsy, but they also look worth more than the bikes, which is probably the deterrent.

Doesn't answer the Q, but can you keep a folder under your desk /
I believe Windows 8 allows you to store folders on your Desktop

how far is your cycle? get a bike that doesn't look good to minimise the threat of theft. get a couple of big locks, which you can leave on the rack.

Bolleaux! May be the case in new build workplaces, as a planning restriction, but not every work place.

You share your space with a lot more than just smelly humans, flea's millions of them, the trim guys in the depots get bitten to pieces by them.
