We have relatives who moved there (Ottawa), also my Mum moved there for a while, so I don't know if that helps or taints the place!

If they would let me in I could go to Cuba and own one of those wonderful old cars from the '50s!

Probably helps! Ottawa's a big place. I'm half a country to the East in New Brunswick. Beautiful place, NB, but its a bit small and well, there's not much to do! Ottawa's actually a nice place. Move there!

Move there!

Yes Sir!!

I really do need to ask my Mum and other relatives about it.
My Aunt (my Dad's Sister) who moved over there in the late '60s with her family is always talking about coming back to Scotland one day. My Mum also lived there for a while in the early '70s as a Teacher, so her view might be a bit outdated by now.

Despite having family over there, I have never been - My Uncle is/was a Highheidyin in the Government Health Department, so they always came here (never short of cash etc).

The one time my Dad visited, he described the countryside as looking like someone had been along and simply dumped buildings randomly in the landscape (something he also said about Poland and also something I've noticed about certain places in Italy)

Look on the bright side, you move to Canada - visit New Brunswick on it's East Coast, and I'll buy you a beer.

When we watch members on here taking flights to the U.S. and so on via these flight tracker sites, we see New Brunswick and Qubec on the map regularly. There seem to be a lot of trees and lakes up there.... Its sounding more like Scotland already!

Well, it's a beautiful place, a great place to ride your bike! Especially when it comes to touring!

The only real negative that I can find about New Brunswick is that everything is so far apart - very different to Weston, where I lived in the UK. But, it's a beautiful place to ride your bike!

Come on over for a tour next year! Beer's on me, just as long as you bring A) a toaster, and B) Marmite.

Either that or I could move to the other side (and country) and be a 'Deadliest catch' Fisherman in Alaska!!

I dislike the American 'Demented Owl' 'Whooping', propensity to prefix everything 'Like', describe everything as 'Awesome!' and say 'Oh my God!' every 10 seconds though

I have also vaguely considered Greenland, but who the heck moves there unless you want to be a Fisherman or a miner..... Fishing and mining using another jawbreaker of a language too?
Besides, like Iceland, they don't have any trains IIRC

lost somewhere
I've always liked the idea of somewhere like Andorra, but I have no idea what its really like, other than they supposedly have a really good quality of life there. Lots of Pyrenean Cycling might be nice!

Actually, what sort of started this off currently was seeing Corsica on the TdF. Yes its France, yes its in the Med, but is it really all THAT obvious a place to go?
Corsica is fabulous. We avoided the beaches and explored the mountains and forests and streams, but that was a while ago. It was about 25% more expensive than mainland France even then, but it was a price well worth paying. BTW, back then, in the mountains, the locals hated the French and would blow up their holiday homes, avoiding deaths, I heard. The papers would report each one as a "Plastic", after the explosive of choice.

Fair weathered, fair minded but easily persuaded.
MD why not just go on a world tour to find the right place. There are enough CCers to show you round and then you could eventually choose where you want to settle. Oh and also send us your candid reviews whilst you are at it.

Just out of interest what's wrong with stopping for coffee and a cigarette ( if you smoke) and having lunch that takes an age?

Slow can be damn good.

I've been to quite a few countries during my life but where I felt most at home was Germany.
I lived and worked there in the end for 15 yrs. If I had a choice I would be back there like a shot.
Second choice would be Alberta, Canada. Stayed there once for 3 months. Great place but never felt like home.
