If you want to move to Canada can I suggest Vancouver Island or one of the other of the Gulf Islands. Oak Bay on VI is like Cheltenham by the sea with an excellent bike shop and safe biking around the coast. This was a favoured home for Vietnam draft dodgers so you are likely to meet some interesting folk, Victoria has Alice Munro's families bookshop - go West young man.

I'm with canada. British Columbia to be exact. Anywhere would be nice but Banff for me, Jasper for the wife (who am I kidding I'd live in either) but I could have simply stopped in Tofino for the rest of my days and never left the place, EVER.
Tofino is stunning as is Long Beach and Ucluelet.

you can do the same in the Lebanon. A country with culture, great towns, and wonderful food.
Yes and I'd love to visit Lebanon one day. You could also do similar in Israel and take in a desert too. Golan, Acre and Beersheva market would make a pretty grand day out.

TBH, Denmark would be perfect except for the fact that its as flat as a pancake. I don't think I could live anywhere flat for any length if time (so that rules out Benelux too).

The south of Germany sounds nice, we went on holiday to The Black Forest several years ago so I've seen parts of it, it was great, and also we've been to Austria and Switzerland too, but, and don't get me wrong, its all very nice and all, but its a bit tame when you have a little railway up the side of each mountain and a tearoom/restaurant at the top. That is where I do like Scotland, but I am not moving to THAT Godforsaken country, oh no no no! :giggle:

As for Eastern Europe, as I say, I always liked Poland and it is one of the few places I didn't feel like a foreigner (which is strange seeing as I was), but what a corker of a language! I'd more than happily settle in Wolsztyn or similar and work on the steam locos (that said, the area is seriously flat, so, maybe not!). The other Eastern European countries sound interesting too and the Balkan countries have long interested me, partly due to their recent history and partly due to their purported beauty.
They also run former British class 87s and '92s in Bulgaria, which is something I'd love to see (I wonder how you go about getting a job driving them?)

Dell, I had thought about some African countries, but, a bit like countries like India, Pakistan etc, I almost feel like I wouldn't belong there. Maybe I'd be wrong, and its a very silly thing to say anyway, I know, but there you go.
That said, Lebanon sounds nice, although I know little about it.

There are so many suggestions, I really did like the picture of this place for example, although I imagine you'd be stuck in some town in a valley instead:

I'd really have to think about them all properly!

What about China if you want to be a train driver?

I imagine the Communist Party would get on my t*ts after a while though. They have an appalling human rights record too and they don't they don't really treat nature with much respect either!

Oh and then there is the fact that they always sound like they are about to murder each other when they speak!!

But they do have some of the largest steam locomotives still being used on mainline routes. Even the model ones are made there, just in case they won't let you drive the real thing.
