I asked about the "well man" checkup you are supposed to have

That's the sort of thing I was getting at initially, and the 50 year old's MOT thing. The advice given by people that don't actually do the work. It's best of intentions for sure, and in an ideal world the health service would love to be able to oblige (or perhaps not!), but I reckon it doesn't square with reality.

I reckon there are those in coal face of health care who could gleefully burn all those well intending leaflets that advise 'if you are worried then see your GP'.

It's the advice of the Breakfast TV sofa doctors. "If you think you've this/that/the other, then pop along and see your GP..."

I can imagine all sorts of objects being thrown at the telly by doctors at home.

It's a bit like any DIY type programme, where they say 'Get a builder to pop in and yada yada yada...' Trying to get a builder to reliably turn up to quote on a biggish job is hard enough, never mind 'popping in' to give you a bit of casual DIY advice which he's going to earn bugger all out of...

I don't understand all this wahalla about overworked GPs, I can get an appointment next day and sometimes same day with my GP and the surgery is seldom busy. I am an enthusiastic user of the NHS, which I think is wonderful. I use the NHS whenever I have a concern about anything; I have paid contributions for 33 years and want to get my money's worth.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of testing the x-ray department at the new NHS treatment centre in Blackburn; it was superb, I was seen within 10 minutes and got to chat with a very friendly radiographer then admire an amazingly clear digital x-ray of my knee. All for free at the point of delivery!

I had to see the Doctor last year when I suffered a mental breakdown leading to an extreme form of kleptomania. I walked into the examination room and he was washing his hands at the sink.
"What's the problem?" he asked continuing to wash his hands.
"Well Doctor" I answered, "I have an uncontrollable urge to steal Spanish made cars".
"I'll be with you in a minute" he replied, "please take a Seat"
"ARRRGGGHHH!!"

Any good?

It's worse when you get diagnosed with Manioklepta and have to keep going into shops and leaving stuff on the counter.
