I'd sell tourers - lots of lovely Thorns like Liesl and other bikes to go places.

And my USP would be a fantastic range of women's clothing instead of a dark corner with a couple of tops, and more importantly proper changing rooms with nice lighting (having had to try shorts on in a curtained off corner with no lights, which meant I had to come into the shop to see myself) and at least two girls in the shop to make women cyclists feel welcome and not intimidated.

It would lure the boys in as well!

My brother and sister-in-law own a bike shop, and it's hard work. They haven't the margin for picking and choosing on the basis of their own enthusiasms. The answer to the OP's question is this - what people buy provided that it will last.

I would sell entry level to middle of the range with genuine advice and no sneering at basic questions. I would have a normal workshop and a Kwik Fix' workshop while you wait for adjusting gears/brakes truing a wheel and minor tweeks. Nice pot of filter coffee on the go at all times.

Nu Uh! We're way way too expensive for such a small concern.
Have you considered Ms S Archer? Shes cheap!

Um, thanks... I think.. Or not...

Sharybloke - there's a bit of a delay on animals, while I do family Christmas presents, but rest assured, once they are done....

There's a great old building here in York the old Stubbs hardware shop, when Stubbs moved it was for sale for ages and Tom used to dream of opening a bike shop there. Three floors, and a basement, there'd have been room for shop, small indoor test track and cafe... A cool place for York cyclists, couriers etc to hang out, and the best bike shop ever...

It's a Loch Fyne restaurant now...

If I had the kind of money required to open a bike shop I almost certainly wouldn't open a bike shop with it. Its hard bloody work for little reward except job satisfaction. The number one reason though is that I wouldnt want to turn into a twunt which is what seems to happen to many bike shop owners.

We are looking into the prospect of retailing special-needs cycles from our premises at the moment as it happens.

I had lunch there yesterday!! It is a lovely building though.

Mine would have to have a time machine out the back.

"1884 54" Humber Penny in green, Sir? Just one moment, I think I can find what you are looking for"

Apart from that, Cyclemagic is heading towards being my fantasy bike shop:biggrin:

I need to sort out the staff, though. "Ladies form a queue on the left, please.
Blokes form a queue outside in the cold and rain - we'll call you if we need anything";)

Sounds like a wonderful Bike shop. Can you give me directions to Blackpool from Worcestershire? Our local bike shop has just closed down, the other one here is more of a racing specialist, and one look at me tells you I am not into racing (bikes).

Of-course you would need to serve tea ;)in case Lord of Teapots came to visit your shop.
