I love how computers are portrayed on television and in films. They can do anything. I'm sure it's been a dissertation subject.

Some programs (NCIS, CSI etc) seem to solve crimes almost entirely by computer. I do sometimes wonder how much of it is taken as real by the viewer. That there are massive databases of information (social security, tax, driving licences, criminal records etc etc etc) is true, but the manner in which it is shown as all being linked and accessible via a single agency is another matter, and the speed with which it is all done! DNA matches in seconds!!

Serves multiple purposes beyond moving a plot along and fitting to the allotted program time. There's the one you highlight above that gives the idea of this smooth well oiled government machine that always gets the bad guys. Reinforces underlying fears, belief in the need for security levels and that your taxes are being well spent. The latter is further reinforced by the extreme dedication all of these people seem to have, working long hours on your behalf. The long hours and hard work is replicated repeatedly across so many programs that I barely notice it any more.

It's exactly that kind of stuff ^^^ that I see as the subject of a dissertation! I'm sure most people realise it's mainly fiction but it none-the-less creates an unrealistic impression.
