I can't seem to gins a Yes or no answer to this. Would I need to pay any kind of duty /tax on items purchased from Germany posted to UK?

It depends, you do not give enough information for a definitive answer. Probably not though, if we assume they are for your own use, and not resale.

Might be different for items from USA.

I've bought from the EU and didn't pay any import duty.

Germany to UK should be fine, tax paid in Germany.

No import duty or additional taxes are payable. You have paid the German equivalent of VAT already on the purchase.
