I know bikes are really cheap in the USA but that it attracts duty on it's import to the UK. I don't want to fly over and bring one back...besides there is a risk....and it's illegal I guess, but what if an American friend of mine brought over his own new bike (which apparently is the same model as the one I aspire to own) and happend to forget to take it home with him...or erm...lost it in my neighborhood?

He came over for a cycling holiday.
What could be more innocent?
Years ago, I bought a Specialised S-works M3 in New York for less than half the the UK price. I had it boxed over there and brought it back through UK customs without ever being challenged even though I was fully prepared to declare it and pay vat and import duty.
Result!
I still have it and caress it every so often.

I brought a bike back over from the US - no questions. I had to pay duty on my new groupset which was bought from e-bay, but even then, still a bargain.
