I am in the city for a few days with the family. We are booked in to see the pandas on Tuesday. What else is a must see? I hope to familiarise myself with a few of the local brews at some point too.

The open top bus tours from Waverley station are a good way of seeing a lot of the city quickly, finding your bearings, and learning some history all at the same time. Go for a tram ride too; they cost us all plenty!
Pubs on the Royal Mile are good but expensive. Some better value ones in the Grassmarket area.
The Meadows or Princes St. gardens area for a relaxing walk. Hire bikes and make use of the various bike routes that cover the city and beyond.....
Leith Walk; The Royal Yacht Britannia.
You cannot get bored in Edinburgh!

Take a climb up Calton Hill for views of......well views of all around, access can be from Waterloo Place which is an eastern extension of Princes Street.
On the right at the top of The Royal Mile you will come to the Camera Obscura, there are optical illusions too! http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/
Then higher up the Royal Mile you come to Edinburgh Castle. The family might want to see and hear the One O' Clock gun being fired.
If aircraft and associated things appeal, take a trip out to the Museum of Flight at East Fortune Airfield.
Enjoy:smile:.

^^^^excellent post and all good attractions.

If you're into aquatics, the Sealife centre just over the river & literally at the foot of the Forth Rail Bridge is an excellent one.

The Castle is a must.

Thanks everyone. I have been in Leith for an evening now and haven't seen James McLevy at all which is a slight disappointment as I'm a big fan.

The good news is the 40mm of rain that was forecast for Tuesday seems to have gone somewhere else so the pandas may not be a washout.

We will give as many of the above suggestions a go as we can.

I don't know why Brandane Liked that post, it's thanks to him we all know the rain over that side is all but constant:sad:.

^_^
The west coast in the rain is still an improvement on the east coast, sun or no sun :okay:. Anyway, the OP is here just now, and the west coast is undergoing an unusual weather episode :sun:.
