The only route you need is...

....the fastest route out of there ;)

Where are you staying in L'pool? Ignore Potsy, he's been refused a passport to get in and has been bitter ever since.

Edit: And what kind of riding and distance do you like?

Hello Crackle

Road riding mostly and a couple of hours in the early evening.

Fairly likely to be at the Albert dock or there abouts.

Do you have anything in mind?

Cheers

Well, some ideas for routes which I could map out on one of the mapping sites. I won't be around much next week (half term), otherwise I might have been able to meet you.

Is it road only or do you mind some cycle path pootering? Despite being in the centre of town you can get out reasonably easy from there, Otterspool way is best and I could certainly suggest some roads which would give you a 2 hour ride.

Your other option would be a ferry across the mersey and ride along the prom on the other side (cyclepaths, NCN stuff & prom) or use Merseyrail to take you and your bike further out to the Wirral for a ride on quieter, more scenic roads. Merseyrail is pretty easy to use, quite regular and bike friendly and it's about a 20 minute train ride.

From the Albert Dock, I'd either:

  • Head north towards Crosby. The roads aren't great until you get past Bootle, but beyond there you've got the choice of perfectly ridable main roads, or beautiful country lanes. I particularly like riding around Little Crosby. There's also the option of carrying on to Southport; if you do that there's a shared-use path the runs alongside the Formby Bypass and very rarely has anyone other than cyclists on it.
  • Head south towards Hale Village. From Albert Dock you can follow the river along the promenade; not the fastest route but you get a great view of the river. There's a stretch of fast road through Garston & Speke (possibly a good thing, as you wouldn't want to go through there slowly!), but once you get past the airport and to the edge of Hale Village the roads suddenly get much quieter. The area around Carr Lane is a favourite of mine, or you could follow the signs for the Trans-Pennine Trail, head past the Pickerings Pasture nature reserve and follow the river again.

Thanks for the pointers chaps.

May use the route out to crosby. Bit dependant on weather as I don't want wet kit laying around the hotel room.

Fingers crossed

Used the route from crosby to southport and back along some very pretty lanes.

Got a wee bit lost out the back of hightown but very enjoyable none the less.

Great beach at southport too.

Even had an ice lolly on the beach
