Just wanted to say that I am enjoying AM's commentary of the Dauphine

IMO: He's better than CK, not that he sets the bar particularly high

Sorry but his pronunciation of French words & names makes me cringe.
I don't expect anyone to be perfect, but really....
What is a horse category climb?

Have to say that I don't mind Carlton Kirby at all under the following conditions:

(1) He isn't the main commentator on really big races (Tour of California suited him down to the ground, I thought). Having said that, he's excellent as the man in Paris during the Tour. Just as long as that's as far as he goes.

(2) When he is the main commentator on smaller races he needs someone knowledgable with him. I think Sean Kelly might lose patience, but Magnus Backstedt and Brian Smith are both outgoing and witty enough to handle him.

Anthony McCrossan nags me, he over-indulges in hyperbole even by cycling commentator standards, quite putting aside his ridiculous pronunciations. He seems affable enough, though.

The Smith Brothers are doing a nice job on the "Tour of Swiss"

Arghh McCrossan is awful...aside from his pronunciation, his monotone voice is somnolent. A horse racing commentator has more character in their voice.

I heard Brian Smith say this in commentary yesterday - got me thinking that it might be some sort of in joke with AM (since they co commentate on cycling.tv)

Along the lines of

Category 2 - 2nd gear ascent
Category 1 - 1st gear ascent
Hors(e) Category - only a horse could get up something that steep

(might just be me though)
