In praise of Bose...

OK. I admit it I thought their stuff was massively overpriced. One of my mates raves about their noise cancelling headphones (She lives in Oz and flies long-haul a heck of a lot.) but I couldn't stomach the price.

Then months ago, whilst wandering through a so-called airport duty free shop, I bought a SoundLink Mini as the quality of the speakers on my Surface Pro 4 is parp.

The SoundLink Mini is a wonderful bit of kit and I have no idea how Bose get the bass reproduction out of something so small (but surprisingly heavy)

Have other bits of Bose kit surpassed your expectations?
Should I review my opinion of the brand as a whole?

I have a Bose accoustimass speaker system, the speakers are tiny but quality sound fills the room.
My daughter has Bose headphones, they too are outstanding.

Surely the key point is your opener...the impression I've always got is that their stuff is good, but you can get just as good for a lot less. When I wanted tiny speakers for our new kitchen, I took note of stuff like:

I got four of their Minx 10 speakers. I haven't been disappointed, to say the least.

The Bose way of making speakers is quite simple, chuffing great big magnets in them gives them greater control of bass but at the expense of midrange (hence the weight)

I've got some noise cancelling headphones and consider them worth every penny, well ok pound.
Apart from the sound quality they really do what it says on the tin. One of the places I use mine is in the gym where they blast out all sorts of 'music' at high volumes. The Bose simply cancel it all out and let me listen to my own selection.

We have a Bose Soubdtouch 30. The software is aweful but it's barely used as it's driven by Spotify. But the sound is amazing.

Similar thing with my Sonos Play:5 - small and heavy but amazing sound.

I have JVC's and Panasonics and whilst they are noise reducing they ain't noise cancelling by any means.

My daughter has asked for some dr dre beats headphones for Christmas
They cost over £200 so she won't be getting them, but I do wonder whether they are worth it. How good can they be.
I see loads of people wearing them but suspect that most are just knock off copies from China.

Did not rate the Acoustimass 10 system, tried different settings, but could never get it to sound how i like it. the sub wooffer was a bit over powering, but they do make some really nice sounding gear,

I've got Bose Soundsport in ear headphones. The stayhear tips are superb, these are the only headphones that stay in place no matter what I'm doing. I also like that they sit just inside the ear rather than completely blocking the ear canal. In terms of sound they are tight and accurate. Not for bass heads though. I've had other brands of in ear head phones and some fairly good quality ones but for overall quality and usability I love the Bose. They do them wireless now so I'd like to try those as well.

Look at what they use on TV & radio (the actual broadcasters - not celebs paid to wear them). Sennheiser or Shure - certainly not Beats.
