My daughter has asked for some dr dre beats headphones for Christmas
They cost over £200 so she won't be getting them, but I do wonder whether they are worth it. How good can they be.
I see loads of people wearing them but suspect that most are just knock off copies from China.

AKG and Beyer are also names to look out for. Quality without blingy but bear in mind it may be the blingy she's after ;)

It's good stuff, it's just that some other less well marketed stuff is better...and cheaper.

Theyare ok, just overpriced
People may suggest cheaper alternatives that sound just as good, but I suspect your daughter isn't concerned about any of that
Most young people want the bling factor that beats have

A friend has a Bose soundlink mini, amazing sound from such a small item (runs it from his Echo Dot playing his Amazon Prime).

I'll be getting one as a xmas present to myself.

I bought a pair of Powerbeats and they were basically so quiet they were useless

On a bus the engine noise would blank out sound, and if anyone talked you could forget it.

Went back within the week, and I reverted to my original Bose in ear headphones

At present I am using a set of Parrot Zik (2) which are fantastic, and immensely adjustable through the phone app

For youngsters the there is also a fashion element

The BOSE stereo was about the only thing that swmbo liked about her mx-5 certainly the only thing she misses

I bought some Dr Dre copies in China for son#2. There was a range of pricing so I went for the most expensive. They were still only about £20. Very good quality and he was very happy with them

I've got Sennheiser Momentum Wireless - fantastic headphones and great for taking on holiday to block out Mr R's family...
I couldn't run to a pair of Momentums, but the Urbanite 'phones I got for £70 in the Argos sale are excellent for the money, with mic, volume and remote for my phone.

People remember what they were doing at big moments in history, like when JFK, John Lennon or JR were shot.
I have a similar moment - the day I walked past a hifi shop in County Mall (Crawley) circa 1996 and heard my first pair of Bose Acoustimass "cubes". No joke, they sounded absolutely stunning and I still dream of owning a pair now.

Trouble is, I was no audiophile then, and even now I only ever listen to MP3s off a USB stick in the TV, or from my phone to a bluetooth speaker.

So more of an audiophobe really, and there are more important things to spend my money on.

PS Can't write "hifi shop" without thinking of Mel Smith.

They wouldn't be my first choice. Or second or third either for that matter..

The bass is way over the top, even by the low standards set by contemporary chart music recordings. As others have said though it's mabe the Bling she's actually looking for. If that's the case go for a pair of Sennheiser Urbanite XL's or - if you can stretch to it - a pair of V-Moda M100's. The M's in particular are a few notches above the Beats in terms of sound quality and in the flesh they're very blingy.

Go to a site like Head-fi and post your query there, someone will be able to suggest more contemporary headphones than I can. For me, only open cans & a dedicated DAC & amp will do the job in the house. Outside I've got V-Moda's but actually use a cheap pair of Sennheiser PX 100-II's. They're open but I like that in an outdoor headphone. It stops me getting squashed.

Here's just a few of my headphones..

I have a Sounddock XT.
100 quid and it sounds superb.Everything sounds very rich and clear on it.
Drawback?
No remote,so I'm going to get the model up and stick the XT in the room.
But I can't speak highly enough of the Bose stuff
