In praise of MaccyDs

Always makes me smile when people come over all snooty about Maccy Dee's.

Finding a fan is harder than trying to find someone who actually reads the SUN, despite it having the largest readership in the UK.

Apparently nobody likes the SUN or McDonald's (along with Corrie, EastEnders, twitbook, fake tan, big brother...) So I wonder, just who are all the people are in the queues at McDonald's then?
I haven't bought anything from Maccy Dees since approximately june 2007, and that was only because Mrs Ceepeebee was having cravings with child1.0. Prior to then, goodness only knows, as for the S*N - never bought it, hateful waste of paper that it is.

Snobby? maybe, it's been said before, I just don't think it's good food though. Also rather prejudiced by the MacLibel stuff from my more idealistic and impressionable years.

I'm not a fan of Macdonalds, but then again I'm not a fan of burger joints anyway.
Last time I visited Macdonalds was in Crawley November last year on the Veterans car run, and before that was the year previous on the same trip.

But.. the Macdonalds in both Bromley and Orpington have both been 'done up' and do look nice places to visit rather then the plastic fast food joints they used to all look like.

The Sun.. nope never bought it was a Daily Mirror man.
Corrie saw it a few times as me mam was a big fan.
Eastenders, nope never seen it.
Twitter, nope, never used it and hidden the twitter nonsense on my facebook nonsense.
Big Brother watched a few of the very first series but not since.
Fake Tan? Me? A ginger? get outta here...

I see where you're going...

Let's leave the bun aside (please, they're awful).
The McD's burger is supposedly pure beef (I've no reason to doubt them) so why do my home made ones taste so much better? Is it the quality of the beef?
That's a good question. I don't know the answer, but some thoughts:
It's forequarter beef from good quality cattle, ground, formed and frozen nothing added, nothing at all, zilch. (I don't think there are special McCows, the rest goes to steaks and joints etc in Retailers/resteraunts etc.). It's likely that it's not aged for long but that would be true for most 'industrially' ground beef. I've never made homemade burgers from forequarter(or even industrial ones for that matter) without some seasoning, so I can't compare, though I've no reason to believe they should taste any different.
Ground beef you buy already in the supermarket might also contain different parts of the animal from purely Forequarter and that might affect the flavour (which is primarily from fat).
Of course if you use ground steak or Angus or grain-fed cows or dry-aged etc etc you might expect a different result.
But most burgers have something added to them, usually flavouring or salt and pepper at the minimum.
McD's burgers also have quite an open structure too, and so that might help cook-out fat and hence some of the flavour too and the method of cooking has an impact too in meat flavour..

What strikes me about MaccyDs is that they have worked out that their greatest asset is the people who work in their branches. There are plenty of large concerns in this country where the 'staff' are manifestly not proud or even interested in their job, but MaccyDs seem to have worked out some alchemy that brings out the best in the people that work for them.

It may be an American thing. I worked in one of the furthest outposts of Kellogg's and the CEO used to come over from Michigan and was clearly at home chatting to people working on the packing line, people he knew by name. I see Sainsbury's replacing their staff with those dreadful beeping machines and wonder if, perhaps, they've overlooked the best of what they've got.

I have for a long time subscribed to the belief that a company's most valuable asset is it's workers.
The way some companies neglect this most valuable & expensive resource suggests that many managers & Directors fail to understand the cost effective potential of human nature.

Brilliant argument there, I've never stuck my hand in a blender either - should I do that to prove it'd have my fingers off?
Well you could if you were daft enough to ignore what your own eyes tell you when you see the thing in action.

But what I wouldn't suggest is that you form an opinion on the blender by simply taking another persons word for it, that's for sure.

I'd want to observe it, test it and then come to my own conclusion.

But that's just the way I form opinion. As such I've eaten McDonalds, read the SUN and the Sport (in its day) along with the Guardian, The Telegraph, Private Eye and many other rags, I've driven a Ford and a Ferrari, drank Cristal and Asti and holidayed in Butlins and the Bahamas...and formed opinions on each...but not without trying them first.

go on give it a go, try a Maccy Dees, you never know you may (like Nigel Havers) enjoy it!

Some classic Internet trollery / keyboard warrioring there, well done. If you'd bothered reading or acknowledging what I wrote, I have eaten macD's food, I just don't think it's very good.

And you should be aware in this day and age that you don't have to buy or even read a newspaper to know it's editorial output and agenda but hey, carry on.
