"The first time ever I saw your face"? The whole world and his dog has covered it, but I think Johnny Cash did the best one.

Ah! Now that might fit into both Dellzeqq's camp (no pun intended) and mine. Dexter Gordon recorded it. DZ probably prefers the Celine Dion version .

not the Conservative party type of standard, where you give tax breaks to married people and then shag the secretary,

........... if I'd known they were connected. I'd have used it as an excuse........

Here's a young dellzeqq arguing with 'Bing', over who can sing...back in the day!

I like this, so, for me - it's a standard!

 Marvellous. Teef, you bring out the nerd in me. Crosby used the tune as his radio theme, but as I've never heard anyone else do it, I have to object to its inclusion in the Standards thread. However, Turk and Ahlert are also responsible for Mean to Me, which is a shoo-in, and also the contenders I'll Get By and I Don't Know Why - I Just Do. And the wonderful Franklin Pangborn is a mainstay of the Astaire-Rogers movies. I just hope Srw doesn't see this thread, or I'm in deep shoot...

Teef - I'm going to have to eat (some of) my words! I just Wikied the song, and found this:

The song was recorded by Rosemary Clooney and also in 1969 by The Bachelors, a popular Irish band. The song When the Deal Goes Down by Bob Dylan is based on the melody of this song, although performed as a waltz.

As you'll all agree the best songwriting (and singing/playing) is in country music, all these have been recorded by dozens of first rate artists. I could go on forever but this is enough to convince anyone...surely! ;)
