The Aged P has gifted me his red one, complete with winged parachute badge. Not that I would ever dream of wearing it. I may have jumped out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft to see what the fuss was all about but all that was waiting for me on the ground was a cream tea not heavily armed fanatics who wanted me dead.

The OP makes the basic mistake of assuming that it's the clothes that make the person in question - but it's not. Most of the people who 'look good' in berets would look good in a sack and a straw hat, and most of the people who look stupid in a beret would just look stupid in any kind of a hat. It's their beauty, their confidence, their aura, their persona, their talent, their reputation (and so on) that makes the beret (or any clothing) cool or not (there are limits to this of course...)
