We have done that for years!

I always had a weeks more leave than my wife, and would keep it for emergncies

Any outstanding was "mine"

She would buy me one way tickets to a destination so I could cycle back!

Mrs Dave does not like flying. If I pressure her she will do short (say 2 hour flights)
Some years ago I wanted to go abroad and she said "why dont you ask (a single mate of mine) to go with you.
I did......and had a great week on Formentera.
 
More seriously....

We used to do a lot together, and the cycling thing worked well

We would tour together on an organised basis with routes planned, hotels booked and everything organised

Then on my week it was random, rough routes, modify as you go and book accommodation late afternoon for that night

Best of both worlds
