No, because then you have to lift a large weight, it is easier to lift two or three smaller weights, especially when leaning over to reach to the back of the van. Actually, it is easier to lift one small weight, which is why I suspect any future such arrangement will include a stipulation that each rider can carry all their luggage on their bike. Because at some point that will happen. And is why I have bought some Ortlieb front panniers: small, waterproof and they fit on the audax bike rear rack. That bike wobbles terribly when carrying two large rear panniers, a large Ortlieb kitbag with camping kit, while the rider wears a large rucksack with more camping kit. I know this.

This won't really help. The big, red Ortlieb corpses-carrier bag was mine - and I was perfectly absolutely able to carry it on my bike. I cycled unsupported from Highbury to HPC and back. But next time, I'll carry less. Promise!

Ah yes but when it was several items tied together?

Mcshroom did that, most sensibly, with all his camping kit, and four panniers. So when I lifted one smallish pannier it was attached to three others and a bag. And some of the hooks on the panniers attached themselves to other people's bags. This made for an interesting mini-session of weightlifting and grunting. But it was sensible way of not losing any kit, and it worked. Had he put it in one bag, it would still been bloody heavy. But as heavy as Sketchley's kit, which was - sensibly - all in one wheelie suitcase that weighed more than the van.
