In the context of football, are 'match' and 'game' the same for you?

If I was playing it's a game. If I was going to spectate more likely to say match

I like that distinction. Something for me to think about there. An active/passive thing.

Can't beat a good existential debate on a foul claggy day...

I am in the match camp for pukka footy matches and more in the game camp for the Sunday Football with Long-suffering Girlfriends on the Sideline affairs.

But Cricket is 100% match, 0% game.

"I saw a cricket match on telly" That's fine.

"I saw a cricket game on telly". That's weird. Maybe you saw some kind of game derived from cricket. Subbuteo Cricket or something like that.

Ah but if some catches you down the pub and say "oy Tomo you used to play, do you fancy a game of cricket on Saturday, Fat Harry has let us down..."

that would sound weird with "match", so maybe this whole thing about sentence construction and context.

Hey, it's what I do! ;)

That's another interesting distinction. Are you a player in the Sunday league game? Or a spectator?

Your brain’s picking up the formality, “match” = official, “game” = friendly. It’s not wrong, just different vibes.

Darn me if I didn't go to soccer practice. I may well have, I can't be sure. I doubt my mum would remember either.

Edit: yup, just googling about, I quite likely did. So, for me, the game/match distinction may come from a cultural difference.

Very good point. You have just destroyed my neat Cricket hypothesis. I hate you.
