Calling the collective wisdom...
Have been watching a few vids from amazon recently, on laptop linked to TV.
Now and then the pause symbol appears in the middle of the screen for no apparent reason, with some info stuff down the side. We can only think it is links to info about the movie or locations or actors or whatever...

Looking on amazon, there appears to be something called X-ray, which sounds like it might be this. But the recent films when this happened did not say they had this X-ray facility, and neither did the help thingy say how to stop it appearing. It's very annoying and we have no interest in breaking into the film to start clicking on other stuff.

Any ideas what it is and how to stop it appearing? It doesn't stay on screen long (a few seconds), but we don't want to see it at all.

X-ray thing works with box sets I've watched and Amazon programming. Sort of like the 'extras' on a DVD, but I've always had to pause it to access them. Actually quite handy for something to look at when you live with someone who has the bladder of a mouse.
Not seen what you're describing but we have a fire TV stick for viewing.
Could it be pushing links for stuff that is on screen at the time? Just in case the character munching cheesy Wotsits gives you a sudden urge to buy some?

I have a prime trial at the moment and have noticed the same thing. Sorry, I have no idea how to stop it, but at least I can confirm you are not going crazy.

I only get the X-ray stuff when I'm on the tablet and touch the screen. You're not doing something similar on the laptop such as using the track pad are you?

I was going to suggest this too - I watch via a Firestick, so X-ray only shows up when paused via the remote, but with you watching via a laptop is something happening to trigger it when you wouldn't expect it? Are you using the laptop for anything else while watching / streaming?

Got Silverlight installed on the laptop?

To show X-Ray
Move your mouse over the player window to show all playback options, including the X-ray panel on the left side. You can select anything in the X-Ray panel to expand it, or selectView All to pause video playback and open a fullscreen view of X-Ray.

To hide X-Ray
The X-Ray panel and playback controls close automatically when you're not using your mouse to interact with the playback window. If you've opened the fullscreen X-Ray view, you can click the Close button ("X" icon) to resume playback.

AS @classic33 says above you can set it to stop it appearing. The random pauses you mention are a result of buffering.... playback has caught up with streaming.

I have Prime and use to get this when I linked the laptop to the tv, I now have the Amazon fire stick and this is much better plus I also have kodi loaded on it with various free apps and I can watch any film or channel , it is brilliant and cheap to get. My sky subscription is now doomed.

Thanks all...
Only streaming - not even touching the laptop while watching, and no other programs usually running.
I read the bits that classic quoted, but as we hadn't done anything to get the X-ray stuff to appear, it didn't make much sense.
Might be worth trying to make sure the mouse is not over the playback window (although not sure how to do this if viewing full screen!)
