Well, that road is pretty narrow - to overtake a cyclist would take driving on the wrong side - not cyclist error, motorist, especially with a blind bend !

A slight aside but one that amuses me. I had my closest call on Wed night, nearly knocked of. By an Ambulance!

Completely OT now today coming back from the cafe with a club mate the traffic was really bad because of road works. We couldn't believe our eyes a black cab (silver actually) just sat there with an ambulance directly behind blaring its siren

What do you say or do when you do get the opportunity to talk to an offender, how do you calmly pint out their eror in a way that makes them learn from it? I can talk to friends / colleagues without a problem (most of them know I am an IAM member, this seems to carry some weight).
A few weeks ago I had a very close pass approaching a bend, oncoming traffic, 30mph zone, slightly down hill, I was probably doing over 25, the numpty gained so much from it that I was still behind him 1/2 mile later, when he pulled into his drive. For a second I thought about stopping and pointing out the error of his ways, a moment later I was past his drive and trying to consider what I would gain from it, denial at best, probably a mouthful of abuse and at worst one of us would be in A&E. I am not afraid of confrontations but I don't go seeking them.

I had a mare of a ride in on Friday. The best was an attempted overtake that ended up with the overtaking driver and an approaching car having to stop, face to face because errrr.....errrr Mr Overtaker should never have ever attempted to overtake me. Nothing to do with my position - the road is narrow, has a 20 mph limit, speed humps and I'm doing about 20mph. But he had to overtake.

OT, but I've got some footage of a courier parking up on the pavement/shared use while on his mobile phone and nearly hitting my bike while I'm stationary waiting for lights to change. C0ck.

Don't worry, its not one of those long rambling posts - even I'm not drunk at 10am in the morning. Bizarrely, although you're on my ignore list I still enjoy you posts by proxy. So much so, I was inspired to write a haiku. Hope you like it!

I'm having trouble understanding why I would be safer not preventing motorists from trying to overtake where it's obviously too dangerous to overtake. Would I be better off letting them scrape past at traffic islands or just before a blind summit so they can swerve into me when the oncoming vehicle appears? Or should I be letting them do this because the extra 5 seconds of their journey is more important than my physical wellbeing? I shall have to rethink my road positioning as I've got it all wrong.

Until last summer I was firmly of the mind that I would keep out of the way. Then a truck nearly squashed me into the side of a row of parked cars - and didn't give a stuff when I confronted the driver.

Now they can bloody well wait. I'll take as much room as I believe is necessary to maximise my safety. I'm sure there'll be the cretins that still have a go, or the one's that believe their life will end if they can't get past, but I don't care anymore.

When I drive I have no problem with cyclists, I'm capable of controlling a car at low speeds and exercising patience without killing someone. Anyone who can't should have their license pulled for life.

There's no call for that. It was a genuine question, based on you having put the sentence "perhaps we need primary plus" (quoted from the OP) in red. I was just wondering why you'd done that. If you prefer to answer with mindless insults, that's ok too.

Check the time i posted this after you called me the same for misunderstanding your post. But then that was ok at the time? I thought it ok of you also;)
The red was for the joke of not putting it into peoples heads.
The other was for the must pass must pass attitude.

Its a balance really. The number of motorists who'll actually be aggressive when you're taking primary is quite small, whereas the number who will accidentally endanger you or just not give a stuff if you're a gutter crawler is very large. On balance it is safer to be assertive on a lot of roads. Unfortunately for many this viewpoint is counter intuitive, and it can take people a long time to learn it. I think a lot of people get put off cycling entirely before they do.
