Try going to bed a lot later. Some people need a lot less sleep than 'normal'. So stop up until 1am, 2am...whatever and get up once you wake. If you are not walking around like a zombie during the day it's doing you no harm. My Maternal Grandmother was a short sleeper spending hours at night making jam and baking. My Grandfather could sleep for England and routinely managed 10 hours a night. It was probably the secret of a happy marriage. ^_^

fill your waking day with torment, pain, anxiety, and all kinds of crap...and enjoy the total relief of the night when it all goes away...you'll sleep like a baby I guarantee it;):tired::tired:

Much better than sleeping pills get your doctor to prescribe you melatonin tablets which is the natural chemical in your body that triggers sleep. You can also buy it on the internet or over the counter if you are visiting the US.

I've tried melatonin, it does work very well....

The trouble I have with these is it takes about half an hour to an hour to work but only lasts for about an hour.. So it's like you have a window of opportunity to go to sleep, and then once you I got it in my head it became a race to get to sleep before the effects wore off.. This just gave me worry about falling asleep which then kept me awake...

It's worth a try though as dirt cheap online.

I haven't tried this yet because the pills haven't turned up yet but Mrs McG has ordered some magnesium supplements for me. Apparently magnesium deficiency is a common cause of sleep loss. Particularly prevelant in people who
Take exercise in large blocks (this applies to many cyclists)
Sweat heavily ( I sweat like a water buffalo)
Drink large quantities of alcohol (errrr, I can only think she must have been thinking of someone else)
Am willing to give them a go as my sleep has become very patchy recently. Will let you know how I get on.

Well, sleep clinic specialist was (IMHO) a completely wasted journey (100 mile round trip). Suggested everything seemed fine and to continue with pills taking another when I wake up after the first one; then see local quack and do a different type, then back on these. None allegedly give major side effects just a degree of dependancy so I'm resigned to the fact pills it is. At least I can get some zzzz's with them. My worry was he would take me off them.

Some good tips here, but honestly I think I have tried them all. Done the melatonin thing, even missed out going to bed completely for a night here and there; makes no diffenece. Done every natural tablet available, again no difference.

I feel a bit more relaxed about the fact I can have tablets for as long as I feel I need them. If that works for me then great. He suggested take an extra one midway through my 'sleep,' personally though I still see sleep as wasted time. Summer is better as I can get up really early and go out in the garden. It is this time of year that sometimes I struggle to find things to do, hence I'd put up with sleep as a matter of something to do to pass the time.

Perhaps it's the dirt cheap online that makes them ineffective. I used to use them when I flew a lot to manage jet lag. I took one once leaving KL for Melbourne and the plane had problems so had to circle for two hours dumping fuel then emergency land and spend two hours getting fixed before leaving again. I missed most of the drama and almost missed the flight because I kept falling asleep. After that I stayed off them on the flights. Try getting the pukka stuff from your GP.

What happens if you just don't sleep and spend the nights posting on CC? Some people just need very little sleep - Mrs T was famously one.

There is also another perfectly viable sleep pattern of sleeping, polyphasic sleeping, for e.g. 15 mins every two hours 24/7. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and Winston Churchill were all polyphasic sleepers.

Why the downer on insomnia. Use the time wisely - I've read the internet and watched every episode of road wars and Babestation 2 since 2008.

I realize this is a 10 year old thread but I've just discovered a cure for insomnia. I noticed that oregano makes me feel sleepy so I just swallow a pinch of it with some water. I'm semi-conscious within half an hour. I can't remember what happens after that so I must be asleep.

I have suffered long bouts of insomnia over the years and one prolonged session totally affected my mental health which necessated a Dr's visit and sleeping pills, never again !
I have read all the 'do's' and 'don't's' as I'm sure most have ? such as do not lay in bed awake ! get up and occupy yourself. I even got to the state where I would rise and go for a walk in the early hours of the morning. For what it's worth here are my thoughts
Simple fact 1, the more you worry about 'not sleeping' the harder it will be to sleep.
Simple fact 2, you almost certainly get more sleep than you think you do.
Simple fact 3, relax yourself, don't 'stress' about daily events and you will sleep, it is a natural bodily function and given the right conditions you will not be able to stay awake ^_^

When in bed, do not check the time, look at your phone etc, just set your alarm (if needed) checking the time is counter-productive ? leading to "Oh no it's 2.45am and I'm still awake"
If you are unable to 'get your head' in a relaxed place conducive to sleep read about breathing exercises for stress.

Best of luck and sweet dreams

All my life ... it's kinda part of who I am I guess. Tried pills once, never again. I just sort of live with it. Some periods are better than others. exercise helps a lot, as does the 'no stimulants in the evening' approach.
