I've had crap sleep since I was knocked off 3 years ago - despite a shoulder op I still can't sleep on my left. I'm on some 'drugs' to ease nerve pain, and one of the side effects is it helps you sleep. I've been on these about 4-5 months which help, but you don't feel too awake i the morning - takes a fair amount to stir. I'm easing off the dose as they didn't work for nerve pain, and they stopped me thinking straight at the 'maximum dose' - not pleasant.

Dropped the dose right down now, Docs will want to put me on something else, but I'll hold off as I should soon be seeing a private pain consultant and hopefully get a treatment plan sorted with the third party's insurers paying !

Certainly wouldn't recomment any drugs which make you sleep - you feel like sh1t in the morning.

Since the thread originated, having a vested interest, I've been looking yet again to see what I might expect when I see the specialist. I came across a 'tip' sent to me via email some time ago.

'Use as much energy up as possible during the day, if you consume 2500-3000 calories look to use up at least 20% more, eat a main meal midday and just a light tea and never after 6pm. Never drink anything at all including milky drinks after 6pm either. No smoking and do not watch anything that increases heart-rate on television during the evening. Try to relax at least an hour or two prior to going to bed. Do not have a cold bed although a cool room is OK. Do not read any book or magazine etc that leaves you thinking about the content. Do not set an alarm and do not have a clock nearby. Once you get used to this way of life sleep problems will be a thing of the past!'

Made me chuckle anyway. zzzzzzzzz

Oh well, the day has arrived. In the morning I am off to Frenchay Hospital to see a specialist, who allegedly is going to help with my sleep ... or lack of it to be more accurate. Sleeping tablets do sod all now so am a bit bu99ered. Not a scooby bliddy doo what he/she is going to say/do, and pals have told me I need to be open minded!

Still, soon as that is done with it is into Specsavers for a battle chat to see what they will do about these rather crappy varifocals they made for me. Yes been wearing em for a decade so well used to VF lens. The thought of going in there tomorrow fills me with dread; almost enough to send me to sleep ... I wish.

If it's because you are depressed or badly stressed you need to address the underlying cause. It could be a physical cause, I have a friend who stopped sleeping almost completely and it was traced to a thyroid problem.

Don't drink ANYTHING after 9pm or peeing time begins at 3am
Oh I've tried all that malarkey  Makes not a scrap of difference to me. I can finally (well could, as I've gotten used to them) get off to sleep OK with the help of the pills, which are designed as such; to get you off. My problem is, a pin dropping will wake me up, and the second I am awake, I'm bored with being in bed and want to do something .... anything other than waste time sleeping ... or trying to. I seem to work on the basis that I will have plenty of time for sleep when I am dead. Seems such a waste spending a third of this life asleep and not using the time I have to do something .... anything other than sleep. I just simply don't get tired. Never drop off in the day, never drop off in the chair even for 5 minutes, never ready for bed no matter what time I try going; I hate the thought of going into the bedroom ... I really DO hate the bloody room. All because it just, well seems such a complete waste tossing and turning hoping that I might get a couple of hours.

When I was on my own a decade or so ago, I would often go three days without bothering to go to bed. I'd always find something to do. Maybe this is just normal for me; in which case tomorrow will be a waste of time; although I appreciate I mustn't think that and be open minded.

I get waken up a lot, put it this way if snoring was in the olympics my wife would get us gold, how so much noise can come out of such a small person confuses me.

On top of that I am a very light sleeper and will wake 6 or 7 times a night, however thankfully I can relax in this time and enjoy being there. Even at my advanced years (55) peeing is not needed throughout the night, shifting the alarm clock so that it could not be seen was a bit of advice that did not work for me. Dietary I do as others on here have posted, in my younger and more stressed years lack of sleep did effect my well being.

I haved no problem dropping off to sleep but after about four hours I wake up thinking that was a good night's sleep, look at the clock and it's only 2:30, sometimes it takes a couple of hours to drop off again only to be wakening up at six or earlier.

Much better than sleeping pills get your doctor to prescribe you melatonin tablets which is the natural chemical in your body that triggers sleep. You can also buy it on the internet or over the counter if you are visiting the US.
