I suddenly find myself with 6 free days for a credit card tour - starting tomorrow - 19th July. I'm based in Chorley, Lancashire and could set off from home or perhaps a short train journey, say 2-3 hours, to get to a start point. Happy to get train home at the end.

My only criteria are rural, peaceful roads and minimum number of people! Plan on about 80 miles/day.

I have three thoughts:

1. Train to Penrith. Eden Valley across towards Berwick and then up to the Borders. Possibly getting train home from Carlisle. I know this area quite well

2. Cycle to Lakes then follow the coast all the way to the Esk river and see how long it takes before deciding on what next. I know the "traditional" Lake District but have never been beyond Grange on the coast.

3. Head to the Yorkshire Dales

Any inspiration would be great. Looks like most of the wind is coming from the West!!

Why not head for Scotland. You could do get to John O Groats in 6 days, doing 80 miles a day. Then another time you could go down to Land's End and ride home. Getting home from John O Groats, may not be so straightforward.

Option 2ish, Train to Grange, Cark, across to Ulverston, over Kirby moors to Broughton then perhaps up the Duddon to Ulpha and turn left to get into Eskdale. (do not be tempted by Hardknott, Ulpha struggle and Red Gill is a lot better on a bike.)

Apologies for not responding earlier - spent the rest of Sunday packing and yesterday riding.

In the end I went for Cumbria. Yesterday train to Lancaster then to Glasson Dock to follow the new Bay Cycleway to Ulverston. I will pop down to Walney Island (Barrow) first thing and then consult the map for the rest of the day.

Cheers
