People who use Instagram might want to know that the company's new policy gives them ALL rights to you photos, including the ability to sell them to anyone they please without paying you a cent, or even notifying you. Your pictures become theirs to do with as they please with no recompense to you. The only way you can 'opt out' of thus draconian deal is to delete your account and photos by the 16th of January.

I never post any of my photos on anything but my own website, but I know plenty of photographers who use Instagram so I thought I would point this new policy out if anyone is interested.

I don't really get why Instagram got so popular, there are other apps with photo effects and there are other image/photo hosting sites.

I think i have a picture of my old cat on there from the one time i tried it, i shall save his image from their clutches!

I don't understand the popularity either.

Facebook paid a cool $1 billion for it a few months ago so clearly they are trying to find a way to monetize it by turning it into the world's largest stock photo library (even if the vst, overwhelming majority of photos on there are rubbish)

Anyway here's a link to a BBC story on the new Instagram policy: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20767537

Similar stories can be found on CNN etc. Apparently it is generating quite a backlash already

The ridiculous thing is, there will be people out there who think it is really cool that a big corporation wants to use their images, and never grasps or cares about the fact that they don"t get a penny for them - they will be happy to be fleeced for their oh-so-brief (and uncredited) moment of 'fame'.

Another interesting thing about the new Instagram policy is if there are any legal troubles associated with using the photos they have appropriated the troubles go straight back to the photographer who took the images. By agreeing to the conditions, or not opting out, you essentially indemnify Instagram. In other words, they get all the money while you assume all the risk - and given that you have no idea where, when or how these pictures, your pictures, are going to be used, those risks could be quite substantial.

Therefore (presumably) Youtube (Google) doesn't get paid for them.
exactly. And your birthday party celebrations get broadcast without you having a say in the matter.

Instagram are saying that the pictures remain yours and only yours. Whether they've changed their mind or people misconstrued the Terms I've no idea
