If you do a lot of business in central London but do not have your office there then it is not a bad place for meetings, or for securing the usual business facilities in short notice. Lunch is not bad.

I once went to a seminar there. An American trying to attend the same seminar was refused entry because he was wearing shorts.

Quite right too.

There are standards to maintain!

Do it if it adds to your CV, otherwise there's no point.

I used to be in the IMechE when I was a design engineer until one day walking down Birdcage Walk I passed the headquarters at about 3pm and staggering up the steps were two red faced fat blokes returning from a good lunch. I thought if this is what my fees go on then you can stuff it. Being a member or not has made absolutely no difference to my career.

they're all on drugs, judging by the way they stagger out of the front door.

I was an IOD member for several years. Well worth it imo if you are based near one of their hubs and can use the facilities.

I found myself visiting about once or twice a year which I could not justify so come the recession I left.
