On Friday my beloved tatty Rover Streetwise went bang.
It threw all its coolant over the A14 and stopped working. The upshot is that I need a nice new engine as the old one is knackered.
We went off today to see our mechanic to see if an engine is viable or if he has a different car that we could have (in our budget) instead. Turns out that this morning he took a Rover Streetwise in part ex. Identical model to the one that just died. It has 50k less on the clock, the bodywork is infinately better and it has a good service history as our mechanic has been looking after it for the last 8 years over its last 2 owners, as they lived in the village. He's going to get the £50 of fuel from the old Rover so I can put it in the new one. He's also taking off my 2 lovely new wheels with their new tyres off and putting them on the new Rover and taking the brand new exhaust off so we can store it for when we need it in the future. He will then weigh it in for scrap and has already knocked the weigh in cost off the price of the new Rover.

My insurance company won't insure the new car, even though its the same make, model and colour as the original car. They don't know what the group is and the underwriters and not in until tomorrow afternoon. They can give me a new policy though (the old one has 6 months to run). They want £42 a month instead of £16 for the original car (only the reg number has changed here remember) plus to cancel the old policy is £192 payable today or £205.97 if I pay by installments.
Its only £96 for the rest of the year by installments so I am not sure there the extra ton comes from.
Am I allowed to name and shame the insurance company on here?

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Thats crap. They should be able to do a straightforward change of vehicle. And why aren't the underwriters in till tomorrow afternoon? Are you sure its the insurance company your dealing with directly and not a broker?

If your dealing with the insurance company, then

1. There is no need to cancel the policy.
2. They can do a simple COV or change of vehicle.

it may cost a bit more if the new car is much newer, but bit won't be that much. They can issue a new certificate of insurance, and you must agree to return the old one.

it sounds like you are dealing with an insurance broker only.

My old insurance wouldn't insure my new Dacia so I switched and it cost me half as much to insure a brand new car than my old 10 year old Astra........

My previous insurance broker couldn't quote me for renewal this year, after being with them for three years, due to their underwriter for the vehicle in question changing their terms. As said above they make it up as they go along.

I have rung them back and spoken to someone else but I am getting the same thing. Apparently there is no manager to speak to either. Not in until tomorrow morning!! I am glad that I have never worked for them. I used to work for Aviva, when it was still Norwich Union and I would have never had done such a think to a customer who had been with us for 5+ years.

I thought that, the COV thing I mean. The car is actually 6 months older so on a 53 reg rather than an 04 but its still gone up to £42 a month instead of £16. I cannot see how she is quoting when she is saying that she doesn't have an insurance group code. Its group 13 btw.
Sorted now, changed insurance company and have opened a dispute with the original lot which is suspending payment for the time being while it gets sorted out. My insurance has gone down to £183.22 as I have turned 50. How blooming groovy is that!

I changed my car two weeks ago and got good quotes from the meerkat, or so I thought. I them tried some other sites directly and save over £80. Expensive toys

I brought a replacement for my trusty old KA at the weekend, a Hyundai Getz, its a year older than the KA but in a lot better condition and has only 62000 miles on the clock, I spent 10 minutes on the phone to Swinton, I'm insured with Aviva through them, dinner time and the cover was swapped no problem though costing me a lot more, I suffer on car insurance because I was car free for over 30 years and I'm treated as a new driver. Your insurance company sound like a bunch of idiots.
