Insurance for France Touring

ok, I have travel insurance which covers medical costs and allows Cycle Touring with no extra premium, if my bike gets stolen I'm covered as long as I report it to police within 24 hours (which given I'm touring I would hope I'd notice it in that time!!)

However I am not covered for personal or public liability. I have checked general cycle insurance and the premium is £150 which seems steep and covers most of what I've already got.

What do other people do and is there any neat 14 day policies out there that will give me peace of mind but not be unreasonable on cost?

My travel insurance includes liability cover. I think it was from HolidaySafe.

Join CTC or British Cycling. Membership includes assistance in the event of an incident - helping with claims etc. not coming to help out!!

From memory both include £2-3m public liability cover. Presumably this is worldwide and certainly should be from CTC.

I forget the cost but somewhere around £20-40 per annum.

£10m from CUK (ex CTC) now but does not cover USA and Canada, according to http://www.cyclinguk.org/sites/defa.../guidance_note_1a_-_2015_members_guidance.pdf - also this is only while cycling, not general public liability cover. I feel it really really ought to be in either household or travel insurance for full cover, but I am not an insurance advisor.

Does your travel insurance really not cover liability? I think it is pretty much standard on all policies?

I took a policy with Alpha Travel Insurance, for a month touring in Spain. Normally my bank account policy would cover me with Natwest, but there was a 22 day max trip duration.
I was surprised how many insurance companies would cover cycling, but not cycle touring, but Alpha stated it in their included activities.
Fortunately I never had cause to use it.

Out of interest are personal and public liability two different things?

Second question is this. Do you have this cover at home? If not, again just out of interest, why are you concerned to have it on tour? It's something which has never occurred to me.

I guess when i say personal i mean legal and injury payout for touring cycling, this isn't covered for me on my travel insurance (excluded specifically for touring). Public liability i mean if i cause an accident and injure someone or cause damage to property and someone decides to sue me, i need to be covered (unlikely i know but for £9.50 a year its a cheap way to peace of mind)

I have it for home as i don't 'tour' at home, i'm merely cycling which is covered under the policy. That said you are right, when i did London-Edinburgh or London-Exeter or JOGLE i was not covered, i just didn't know or think about it ... maybe I'm getting older.

I use Sports Direct which covers cycle touring and the annual premium was very reasonable.

Don't forget to make sure that your insurance covers being sued by dropped hats.

dog tag insurance is really good and you actually receive a dog tag which has all your details on it incase of an emergency.

Tesco is good value and you can choose which level of cover you have. I use its annual policy.
